iPod Touch 2.1 and Audiobook problems

I am experiencing a problem with audiobooks on my upgraded version 2.1 iPod Touch 32GB.

When I touch the audibook option in the Music application... the app closes and returns me to the main screen of icons. I did some experimentation and it seems to be related to the number of books, not the size of the files. I can get 18 books + any number of Audible books. Whenever I get to 19 books + Audible the error occurs.

Any ideas?

I have an alternative workaround that I think actually works better than the playlist solution... limit the number of audiobooks you sync to your iPod.

I have configured my iPod to only sync the items I have checked. I then went to my audiobooks and unselected everything. Now I have only the book I am listening to + a couple of alternatives, and then my kids audiobooks.

My Audible books all count as 1 in the possible 20 so that is not limited... at least, I haven't loaded up 20 Audible books to test it.

Hope it helps.

I am also experiencing this error. I just upgraded to 2.0, and now with the 2.1 update, I can't listen to all my audiobooks.

In my case, I have the entire New Testament (Bible) on my iPod Touch, with each separate book of the New Testament listed as its own audiobook. I got this in audiobook format so that I could have the whole NT with me wherever I go. Now, since there are 27 books in the NT, I can only have 19 of them.

RIDICULOUS! Apple, if your customers are PAYING to update their iPod softwear, DON'T MAKE NEWER VERSIONS WORSE!

Please fix this problem ASAP.

I am experiencing a different problem... My audiobooks (over 300 from audible) show up fine when on playlists including normal playlists - not just the audiobook playlist - try that first if you're having the above problem.

However, after a while (a few hours) of playing a book, the audio becomes garbled. Pausing and restarting play does not fix this, however, moving forward and then backward through the file seems to fix the problem. I usually go 1 min forward and then back as close as I can get to where I was.

This is rather annoying since the scrubber control on the touch is so small and hard to use accurately...

This problem started after I upgraded to 2.1.

So far, I have had it happen 4 times with 2 different files. - Doesn't sound like much, but I only updated yesterday.

At first, I thought it might be a corrupt file, so I tried a different file. When it happened to that file, I played the first file on my old iPod video. The old iPod had no problems playing it, and when I went back to the file on the touch, it played fine.

The last 2 times, scrubbing a little forward and then back got rid of the problem.

Does it happen after you listen for some number of minutes? Maybe it only starts happening after you are some number of minutes into an audiobook? Maybe it is limited to Audible books?

I am listening to an audiobook I made with Audiobook Builder and am 5 hours into the book and have not experienced the problem after listening continually for 60 minutes.

It doesn't even let you enter the audiobook section of your music Icon.
But the problem only occurs with the last update 2.1 of the Ipod Touch and if you have more than 19 or 20 audiobooks in your library. Earlier versions don't have a problem, and that's the reason why all of us in this tread are regretting updating our Ipods.
Please don't tell me that you have the latest update 2.1 and are still able to listen your audiobooks because I will commit suicide right at this very moment!.

it seems to be more closely related to the format. I have just finished listening to a 2 hour mp3 without a problem, but before that I had it happen only 30 minutes into a 47 minute audible file.

Prior to that, the other two files were both 6 (or so) hour long audible files.

All of the files it has happened with were format 3 audible files.

It also doesn't seem to happen if you are moving or skipping around in the file... Only after significant time playing straight through.

Sorry, I had the same issue as you when I first upgraded. Now I'm having a different issue (garbled audio on audible files after listening to them straight through)
Here's what I did to "resolve" the issue you're having:
1. set music to sync selected playlists only (started out that way since my 40GB music collection won't fit on the touch.)
2. DID NOT select the Audiobooks playlist.
3. Created 2 new regular playlists for the books I want on the device: (Current books and other books) and set them to sync.

I now have 36 out of my 300+ audible titles on the touch. I can play them on those playlists, and the audiobook section works!

I'm actually finding it to be easier and better to manage my books on these 2 small playlists than on my long audiobooks entry.. even after apple fixes that problem, I think I will continue to do it this way.

Incidentally, all of the audiobooks that are on my touch are format 3 Audible files.
