Several apps crash since installation of QuickTime 7.5.5

Since the update to QuickTime 7.5.5 I am having problems with the following apps (so far):
- Preferences / Screensaver
- iChat
- Image Capture

These apps crash shortly after launch...

PowerBook G4, 1.33 GHz, 768 MB RAM, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

After installing new software you should use the Disk Utility app to "Repair" permissions.

Thank you for the hint - but it did not solve the problem: the apps still crash 😟

I did 'repair permissions' twice with reboots inbetween, no change.

Another thing I tried is launching the apps within my admin account, but they crash there, too.

Have you tried running the Console application (in your utilities folder) to see if it mentions anything that might help to try to solve the problem? Also, have you installed any software specifically to assist with the playback of .AVI movies?

hey i'm having the same problem with the applications crashing and its quite a hassle, but for a temporary fix, open your applications in rosetta emulation. it at least lets you have access to them

ScreenSaver pref panel crash:

Image Capture crash:

I have installed Flip4Mac 2.2.1.11 for AVI playback.

Now the problem is solved! I did a manual download of QuickTime 7.5.5 and re-installed it. Now it works 🙂

The question remaining: why did the regular SW update (from system preferences) not work properly?

unfortunately, the problem still remains for me. the reinstall didn't work. are there any other ideas out there?

Hi there,
Problems here as well. Identical issue on two different machines. Video plays for 2 or 3 seconds then freezes. In a DVD skipping a chapter plays the next 3 seconds then it freezes again.
In Elgato tv it seems to stream and save TV as you can use fast forward and rewind but you can't watch live TV.
Serves me right for updating two at the same time.
Tried the permissions trick but no change. Now trying download and reinstall (on one).
One is a G4 with latest version of 10.4 and the other is an Intel 2.66 latest iMac with latest version of 10.5.

How do I uninstall and get back to where I was? I assume I would need to uninstall iTunes as well? What a pain.

Yeeha,

Fixed it.
I did the download and re-install as suggested by BluBluBlu and it works a treat. This was on the 10.5 Imac, now off to try the same trick on the 10.4 one.

I downloaded and ran the standalone update for 10.4 and it also fixed the video glitch issue.

Worth a try if you have the same problem.

Hi all,

I have the same problem with crashing apps after the quicktime update. I am however unable to download the standalone updater (www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime755forTiger.html) since all my webbrowsers are crashing... I tried to download the QT update at work, (windows PC) to transfer the file with an USB stick, but get redirected to a page with windows version only. Any idea on how to access the osx updater from a windows machine? I went to an Apple store but they could not help me with the download (policy not to add foreign hardware, i.e. my USB stick, to their machines).
