Cannot download or update to iPod Touch 2.1

Everytime I try to update to the new iPod Touch software 2.1 it says,

"A new iPod software version (2.1) is available, but requires iTunes 8.0. Would you like to download iTunes 8.0 now?"

I'm already running iTunes 8.0.0.35 right now (I downloaded and installed it from the Apple website yesterday when the download was first available). I'm running iPod Touch software 2.0.2

I keep seeing that many people have been able to update 2.1, but even when I say "yes-download iTunes 8" again--there's simply nothing happening.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Has anyone else been able to successfully update to 2.1 using similar computer--Vista computer running iTunes 8, updating from 2.0.2?

Any ideas?

that's not an issue for me. I currently have 2.1.1 installed.

my only REAL issue with the new touch is that it won't charge on my old accessories. I have my car wired and my JBL speaker...neither charge it...which now, after reading iLounge's review, I see why. they changed the charging mechanism, so basically we're screwed there...

I believe that it's a iTunes problem. I tried three separate accounts and all have experienced the same problem. First, it asks me to download iTunes 8 and then it displays a brief download indication then disappears but these are all on the same machine, but different accounts. It also looks like it tries to download version 2.0 then stalls.

Hi All,

I'm having the same issue here. iTunes is making me restore my iTouch and hangs up at the restoring iPod Firmware stage. I stuck with a paper weight for now. I've reinstalled iTunes 8.0 about three times also. Initially I was propmpted to download 2.1, did that, then the fun started. Soooo, I can't even restore the thing...Any suggestions besides buy a new one 🙂

Regards,

Russ

I'm having this same problem and I'm wondering how I'm supposed to update my iPhone to 2.1. I have iTunes 8 installed and continue to get this error message.

It seems to me with all of the commercials Apple puts out dissing Microsoft for incompatibility issues and instability, they should ensure their products match the quality of their philosophy.

and i thought i was alone on this....

first my 1st gen 32 gig touch didnt detect either manually or automatically the new upgrade, so i had to go into the itunes store, purchase the upgrade...again!!! then run the upgrade, but wait, nothing happens!!!im stuck with just the page on the itunes store that says that the update will take 30 minutes or so to download, etc, but in reality nothing gets downloaded....i did notice the 0.4kb download but thats it...so, i spent 30 dollars in tota and i cant get any upgrade!!! so frustrating...any news on the subject?

I had the same issue with my iPod touch when trying to follow the link form the App Store after installing iTunes 8. In the end what worked for me was to go to the Help menu in iTunes and click on "Check for Updates". Doing this brought up the familiar update iPod dialog where I could click on "Download and install".

Going this route I was able to successfully update my iPos to version 2.1.

but the procedure only updates or checks for updates your itunes version...to check if there are any updates for the ipod touch, you have to click on the "check for updates" button that appears when you have your ipod connected to itunes. i tried this solution but to no avail....also, i cant seem to restore my ipod, its impossible to do it, because itunes tell me that there are not any prior sofware versions to 2.0...im stuck on 2.0 and i cant restore and i cant update to 2.1, and i already paid for the update....thats so annoying 😟

Hi,

I had the following problem:

I wanted to update my girlfriends touch to 2.1. So I bought the update, but it wasn't loading. (Just for 2 seconds the "Download" field showed up).

There was no way to install the update even thou i payed for it.

My solution was the following: Put your iPod touch in Recovery mode (google it if you don't know it, it's simple). Then connect your iPod touch to iTunes.

iTunes will tell you it detected an iPod in recovery Mode and asks if you want to update and restore the device.

Finally the 2.1 download worked. Attention: All your settings will be gone after the restore, but at least you'll have the 2.1.

Really strange. I had absolutely no problem updating to 2.1 with my iPhone 3G (btw. great update) but that iPod touch thing was wierd.

Greetings from Germany,
Ole
