typing IPA font into Word document

Is anyone familiar with some convenient way of typing the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) font in a Word document. Word doesn't even recognize the IPA font I have installed. The only thing I have been successful with is painfully inserting the font one by one using the Character Palette into TextEdit.

Is there another IPA font that is more compatible? I thought all truetype fonts would work... Is there another program I need to use the keyboard to type a strange font?

G4/533/DA, Mac OS X (10.4.11), Microsoft Word v. 10.1.4, IPAKiel truetype font

If you do not want to use the Character Palette, then you can download and install an IPA keyboard layout from this site:

http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?siteid=nrsi&item_id=ipa-silkeyboard

Whether it will make all the characters you need I don't know. For more info, see

This advice assumes you are using Word 2004 or higher. Word X is not capable of doing IPA in any useful way.

One shortcoming of this page is that the part where is says "fire up any text editor" is inaccurate. You cannot use the still-common Word X or AppleWorks, because they cannot handle the Unicode which this kind of IPA requires. Word 2004 and Word 2008 should work OK however.
