Safari can't connect even though ping connects in 5ms.

I've got a Mac Pro running OS X Server 10.4.11. But this is not really a Server question.

When I use Safari (or Firefox) to browse the web, intermittently Safari reports that it can't open the page because it can't connect to the server. See the message below. But it does this even when I've got PING running and succeeding in contacting the server once every second, with a 5ms response time.

How can I track this down? What log file shows details of Safari's connection attenpts?

And it's not just Safari. My computer is also hard to access from other computers intermittently as well. And it's not a general network problem: Other computers on the same switch have no trouble.

Can anyone tell me where to look to get more information about these failures? I see nothing in any of the logs I've checked.

Here's the Safari error message:

Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “ http://someUrl/” because it could not connect to the server “someUrl”.

Pinging the server only tells you that it's on the network. It doesn't mean that it's responding to port 80. You really need to look at the logs on the server end to see if the connections are being rejected. The next time it happens, try telnetting to port 80 and see if the port is open.

telnet httpserver 80
from the command line. If it opens, you can type raw html to test.

Ok I tried that. See results below, and thanks!

(BTW, another symptom is that when I can view a webpage, I often get an impoverished version with icons instead of images, no banners, and a simple layout).

I'll use the site http://perldoc.perl.org/ as a test case. I get intermittent connectivity to it. Ping always succeeds, in about 70-80ms. telnet sometimes fails. It just failed 2 out of 9 times just now. Here's what it says:

telnet perldoc.perl.org 80
Trying 63.251.223.164...
Connected to x4.develooper.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

telnet perldoc.perl.org 80
Trying 63.251.223.164...
telnet: connect to address 63.251.223.164: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

What's going on?

And just so you know I'm not trying "obscure" websites:

telnet www.google.com 80
Trying 64.233.169.103...
telnet: connect to address 64.233.169.103: Connection refused
Trying 64.233.169.104...
telnet: connect to address 64.233.169.104: Connection refused
Trying 64.233.169.147...
telnet: connect to address 64.233.169.147: Connection refused
Trying 64.233.169.99...
telnet: connect to address 64.233.169.99: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host
