Quicktime error stops video recording

I am receiving a Quicktime Error:
"recording stopped because the maximum duration for the file has been reached" Try continuing recording in a new file.
Then it shuts the camcorder off.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I'm experiencing the same problem with the same error message.
The problem is inconsistent in this way: Quicktime will sometimes record 2 minutes of a .mov file and at other times record 50 minutes of video before it displays the message.

I'm recording using Quicktime 7.5.5 with H.264 compression at Best Quality, (640 x 480). I called Apple support and they suggested that I increase my disk cache in preferences. This setting is only related to the browser cache, and had no effect on the problem.

Any additional help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem last night while recording from a VHS through Quicktime Pro - but the limit was variable from 1 minute to 5. Very frustrating few hours trying to get a whole movie made. And was so disgusted with the resulting 23 pieces I threw it all out. I finally went to iMovie 8 and imported directly into the program from the recorder, which worked perfectly.

Had 200 Gb on the disk I was recording to, so it wasn't a memory or size issue.

Help us, Apple!

I am also having the same problems and have found that one cause is that when my inputs are coming through another device, serial port, if that middle device interrupts it shuts down the recording.

I have a second issue as well that I need an answer on: I recorded the other day and it stopped for no apparent reason, I know that some volume was recorded in buffer, but the movie 4.mov default file shows only zero bytes. Typically in the pass, when I shut down the error it would save from buffer into the named file. This time it didn't and I'm wondering if it's possible to locate the buffer file or cache to save the recorded portion?

Help!

I am also having this same issue. I get the error in Quicktime Pro: "Recording stopped because the maximum duration for the file has been reached. Try continuing recording in a new file."

I called Apple support and they were not able to help but in talking with them I figured out what might be the problem. Often there are some breaks in the data being transmitted across firewire because there was a drop out in the tape. I believe that this is the problem because I would keep getting the error in the same part of the tape. There is no timecode break so if I capture in Final Cut Pro, I get two files instead of one but I at least can record the whole thing without stopping. The reason I want to use Quicktime is to record at a smaller screen size.

My work around is buy better tapes! Or to play the video past the problem area (this may mean losing some video) and start a new recording. Alternatively, use final cut pro to do your recording. If you use iMovie and want to adjust the volume, you may need to use a mixer and a digital converter box to do it all in one shot. Doing it this way you may lose some video quality as well.

Good luck everyone. I hope this helps.

I am having the same problem. I have been transferring video from VHS to DVD for a couple of years now. I took a six month break, so in the last six months one of the Quicktime's upgrades broke the program. In the past I have transferred two hour long tapes into 25 gig files with no problems. Quicktime was the work-horse it was the most reliable for recording, iMovie would cut-out with any glitch in the tape but Quicktime would just keep on recording. I looks to me that Apple tampered with the programs ability to detect scene changes and tuned the programs engine to work better with FCE or Pro. I just hope Apple realizes this and fixes it soon.

I'm wondering if you or anyone found a solution to this problem (+"recording stopped because the maximum duration for the file has been reached"+)?

I sort of have. That is, it works but only on my G4 Powerbook, running OS 10.3.9, using QT Pro 7.1.2.
I just completed importing/recording a one hour long video. I was playing out from my TV / DVR into a DV Converter (Miglia) and connecting that via firewire to the G4.
The thing is, the exact same set up refuses to work on my Mac Pro (OS 10.5; QT Pro 7.5). By the way, same goes for iMovie. Quits after so many minutes on my Mac Pro, but keeps on recording on my Powerbook G4.

I have not been able to isolate the problem and resigned myself to keeping my G4 exactly as is just for this purpose.
