what formats are supported by iMovie?

What file formats are supported by iMovie? I was wondering because I have two issues with video footage:

1) I currently have a VHS-C camcorder (and eyeTV USB for import) is this importable without a problem?

2) is 3GP supported? I want to import clips from my cell phone!

thank you!

iBook G4 (Early 2004), Mac OS X (10.4.11), 768 MB RAM, External DVD-RW drive, and a firewire HD (is full!)

iMovie HD6 accepts DV files via firewire only.

.. hmm, yes ... no.. not quite .. almost.. kindasortof .. 😉

iMHD6 is meant as a DV-editor; it 'clones' the data-streams from any miniDV/Standards camcorder (=no quality loss). (and D8.. but that is 'historic')

but..
importing from HDV (=HiDef on miniDV) is also imported; the mp2 streams get automatically converted to AIC.. the other natively supported iMHD6 codec.

and ..
if you import +any other+ codec, the underlying QT-engine will try to convert these codecs into something 'editable'; phone 'videos'/3gp are usually: wrong resolution, wrong framerate, wrong color scheme.. but can be converted. some.. somehow.

summary:
iMHD6 is NO all-purpose/all-codec editor, it is meant _by concept_ to be run with camcorders.
for other codecs, consider usage of other editor tools.

don't want to correct you, Forest, you gave/give excellent advices .. just me playing the wiseguy here.. 😉
