Itunes could not contact the IPhone Software update server because you are

I love my iPhone and still able to use but up unitl now with the new release of the iTunes 8.0 version I cannot update the software on my original iPhone. I am still running 1.1.4 versio software and wanted to upgrade to the new 2.0.2 software but I get iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet. Ok, obviously I would not be able to post this. I contacted apple and they tell me to uninstall this...reinstall this...blah blah blah. My internet connection was always working with the older version iTunes. I keep telling apple that it is there software but the keep insisting that it is my computer. Is anyone else having this problem with the new iTunes? If so, how did anyone correct it?

Okay I haven't been able to update my iPhone ever since I updated my iTunes to the 8.0 version either! I just followed your instructions and changed the setting on my control panel and then asked to update and it started updating and after about 10 seconds it popped up with the same message that iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update because you are not connected to the internet. Check back or try again later or whatever. So I went back to the Internet Connections to make sure that my changes saved and they did but it still will not update my phone...this is soooo frustrating!!!! Please help!
