I think it may be that the speaker simply died.
I was listening to a song and halfway through the song the sound cut out. I have no idea what happened. I can't get any sound out of my phone unless I plug in the headphones. I've tried everything except for a restore. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I am having the same problem. I did a restore and no dice.

Good call! Is there anything else that you can plug them in to test whether they're still working?
Does trying everything except for a restore include inserting and removing the earbuds several times in a row? The mechanism that turns the external speaker on and off when inserting/removing the earbuds may be stuck on having the earbuds inserted.
I had the issue once in a while when plugging in a set of BOSE ear buds...the fix, quickly plug in and unplug any head phone/speaker jack a few times. I believe that once in a while you get a magnetized glitch in the phones jack, and it always seems to work for me. It "resets"it. Just slide it in and out 5 times and try it then.
My Grandmother swore blind that dancing naked at the junction of Main Street on the night of a full-moon was the solution.....honest....and with loads of 'genuine' technological justification too!
