iPhone apps won't work

I just purchased an iPhone 3G and downloaded a few common, free apps (New York Times, Wikipanion, etc.) They loaded onto my menu just fine, but when I select them the correct screen comes up for a few seconds, then abruptly shuts off and sends me back to the menu screen. The same thing is happening for all my new apps. Everything else on the phone is working just fine, and - per a suggestion on this discussion board - I just downloaded the newest version of the firmware that came out this morning (9/12). Still, the problem persists. Any idea what might be causing this and how I could fix the problem?

Updated to 8.0 prior to iPhone, and did firmware update first thing...

Also, little update: the apps work! Kinda... They work over the cellular network, but not WiFi.

To other people having problems: try turning off your wifi. I'm theorizing that my signal is too weak (which is ridiculous, given where I'm sitting) or that the router is playing havoc with the applications. Granted, this shouldn't make a difference, but...

Unfortunately I can't turn off the WiFi as the app depends upon it and wont work over 3G/E (it is the Sonos Zones application). That's also why I can't be sure if its the app or the DRM as my WiFi setup UPnP data will be different to other users of this application.

Apple at least could have put some dialog or something in to show you if the app was failing on DRM and to avoid all the different developers chasing a potential bug that isn't there.

I had the same problem. I downloaded all the apps from the app store on the iPhone. I didn't sync with the desktop for a week. After I synced, none of the apps workd on the iPhone. I launched iTunes, looked at the apps and double clicked on one. It said the app was not authorized on this computer and it asked me to log in. I did and authorized the app. I re-synced the iPod and everything works now

My 3g Phone has done this 4 times now, about a week a part.
I restored the phone using itunes, deleted and reload apps, and updated the phone twice.
I only fixed it 3 times cuz I've given up and just now use it as a phone with no apps even tho I have bought $50 worth of apps.(after I called apple help line).
I have no reason to beleave that I'm not just wasting my time cuz it will do it again after another week.(the last time it worked for 10 days)
Thanks Apple! for the help (help = none)

I have owned many (at least 7) windows CE and Palm phones and never had to restore one yet. I updated a few but never totally had to restore one yet.

The Iphone just looked so cute. I thought apples were better then this.

Hi,

I had the same problem and isolated it to a DRM issue. My 1st gen iPhone wouldn't play music purchased from iTunes or run apps purchased from iTunes (but music I loaded myself, ripped from CD worked fine). All other native apps worked fine (Safari, Phone, Txt, etc.).

I tried to sync and did a reset and it did not fix the issue. I then deleted an album of music off the iPhone (one I had purchased from iTunes) and then resynced it to the iPhone. This triggered my iPhone to correct all the metadata for the purchased items (including apps), indicating they were authorized to work with the DRMd items, and then everything worked fine. This is easier than a restore or reset and seems to do the trick. My experience is that you can sync and sync and sync without resolving the issue...until you make a change and THEN sync which seems to trigger things. I also had this problem initially trying to get the Genius Playlist feature to work....once I added some music, voila, everything was there. Hope this helps.

Apple won't help you.

They do not respond to postings on this board, nor to email bug submissions. You can try their phone line but they will likely tell you it is an application problem... the reality is that the 2.1 release broke many applications as Apple did not inform app vendors of changes that would cripple applications that previously worked. Many of these vendors are waiting for Apple to approve and release the fixes to the App store... Apple apparently values its App store process above its own quality process or the needs of its customers...

You might try contacting the vendor of your app to see if they are aware of the problem (or need additional information from you to resolve it) or if they have already submitted the upgraded application to Apple and its simply a matter of you having to wait for Apple to get its release process caught up. (I'm currently waiting fixes for 7 broken apps that worked prior to 2.1 - when any apps worked at all during that period - plus Safari and other web related apps that are now extremely flakey and crash at will during operation).

Did you try my steps above, specifically Deauthorizing and Authorizing iTunes? You don't mention having tried that - it has fixed "stuck" Apps for many people here.

BTW once I was able to get 2.1 installed mine hasn't had this issue since. I don't believe that 2.1 broke the Apps...they were broke before and actually 2.1 has lessened the reports of broken Apps than previous to 2.1.

2.1 resolved bugs apple admitted they had only when they finally released it.
But in doing so they made changes without advance notice to many app vendors.

The seven apps I am talking about worked under 2.1 (At least they did whenever 2.1 worked)

There may indeed be less apps with problems now, there should be none.

If advance notice of changes that would cause applications not to function was not possible, then Apple should have had extra resources in place to quickly approve the vendors upgraded releases - not let the vendors take flack for being unresponsive when it is once again Apple that is the bottleneck.

One vendor with a problem submitted a fix immediately after the release - I do not know yet whether they fell afoul of Apple's release timetables or have other problems but its now over a week and there has been no update on the App store. Other vendors are indicating they are still awaiting word from Apple on the status of their fix submissions.

My app was immediately quitting before and after 2.1/8 and the app author has not seen issues with other users so I believe it's a DRM problem.

I am amazed , and most frustrated that Apple contribute no comment , or support path for this. It does not marry well with the general Apple 'glow' they market. At least having some way of the iPhone advising you what the problem is (DRM) would be a help - rather than hassling app authors with erroneous bug reports. I am waiting in the hope that an application update for other new features might update the DRM as it is replaced.

I did follow the suggestions from 'ImYourMacDaddy' (to the letter) but it has not worked for me.

Come on Apple , help your users !

Surely someone (Apple) can tell me as way to determine of it's the DRM that is force quitting my purchased applicaton and if there's anything I can do to fix it. Would refund /re-purchase work ? Even if you said that you were aware of the issue but I had to wait until 2.2 that would suffice. Using your other support channels has been no help at all - how can I progress this ?

I don't want to needlessly hassle the author if it's not a problem with his application - that just wastes everyone's time and patience.

OK .. The author now has an updated version available on iTunes and when updated direct from the iPhone it is running fine 🙂

Now obviously this could be an application fix but I still remain convinced this was a DRM issue . The iPhone/iPod Touch should advise users if an application is being terminated for licensing issues and this would avoid developers being harassed and chasing bugs that don't exist.

Slight concern is that I was pursuing a refund/repurchase route and Apple have advised that I shouldn't attempt a repurchase for at least two weeks after a refund. I assume they will be attempting to kill the application during that time - which seems a bit paradoxical as it was already dead.
