Drive reads no discs

Hello, and thanks for taking the time to at least see what problem I'm having.

First off, the problem: discs will not mount. None - this is not a problem specific to CD-Rs, DVD-R/RW.. no disc will mount, they just eject after the drive attempts to spin up 2 times (from what I can hear, just guessing here).

Next, what I was doing when the problem first started happening: installing windows games to run them with WINE (darwine speficially).

What I've done so far trying to fix the problem: after reading lots of the articles on this forum, I've tried to...

1) repair permissions (I don't know why it would help an error with the disc drive, but oh well, I tried it and it didn't fix my problem)
2) find the preference list for WINE and delete them. I thought maybe when I was setting up the drive (IE choosing what media is C:, D:, etc) I somehow screwed up OS X's ability to read discs.

Other info that might be useful -

-when trying to get a disc to read, no messages show up in the Console

-my drive: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E with firmware ZA0E

hope that gives you all enough information to help me out here.

Thank you in advance

hello,

having a very similar problem!

my cd/dvd on my macbook pro seems to have given up the ghost. no matter what disc i put in...it just attempts to read it a couple of times. then it just throws the disc back out. ive tried various different discs but its the same every time. i cant remember having done anything recently to it, but since i dont use the cd drive much i cant really be too sure as to when it has stopped working.

...maybe it was the 10.5.4 update...because i remember 10.5.3 stopped my mac from shutting down...

i have tried all of the aforementioned discs in a windows xp laptop and they work as normal...so its not the discs for sure.

my drive details:

HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:

Firmware Revision: AP09
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

any ideas as to what i should do?

I found the following in the Help menu.

To have CDs and DVDs appear on the desktop:

Open a Finder window to see if the disc appears in the sidebar. If it does, your Finder preferences are set not to show CDs and DVDs on the desktop.

To change this setting, choose Finder > Preferences, click General, and select the “CDs, DVDs, and iPods” checkbox.

Check your CD & DVD preferences by choosing Apple menu > System Preferences and clicking CDs & DVDs. If you’ve set the computer to ignore a CD or DVD when it’s inserted, you won’t see your disc on the desktop or in a Finder window. Change the appropriate setting to open the Finder when a disc is inserted.

I had a problem with my MBP where it wouldn't burn any discs.
How did I solve it?

I had one of these from about 10 years ago. I decided what the heck? I ran it through my MBP and it fixed all my optical problems. Give it a try!

I'm having the same problem. I put 2 cd's in this morning...it was all good. put another in and now all of a sudden NO cd/dvd will work. it takes it in and spits it right back out automatically!! sigh...AND my hard drive DIED just last week too! I bought mac because I thought they were superior to PC....sigh.
i am still under warranty so apple replaced it. does the cd drive need to be replaced too??!

please do let us know what the geniuses say!

I have a similar problem. It is driving me insane and I still have no solution. But I will post my findings in the hope it helps solve the problem for both myself and others.

I believe it may be since the last update (10.5.5) that this problem has occured.

My other 12" laptop and old desktop reads discs fine, both OS's not updated to latest. My MacBook Pro refuses to read DVDs which are formatted with a DOS (PC) part. It reads CDs fine it seems, but any DVD with a data part that is formatted as DOS does not mount. The behaviour is the same as others have described in this topic - spins a couple of times, then ejects. It will read HFS mac formatted DVDs just fine.

This interesting part is this: loading up in boot camp, the drive does not read the same DVDs. I have not tried with CDs. Also, my Macbook Pro will write data DVDs in DOS format fine, but it will be unable to read the same DVD whilst my other computers will be able to read the newly written DVD.

So very confused and annoyed. I wouldn't have even bumped into this problem if it was not for the fact I need to reinstall Windows on my Boot Camp partition.

hey guys,

took my mac to the genius people.

he asked me to show him what the problem was...i put the disc in...2 spin ups later...out it came.

he tried the same disc in his 17" MBP and it worked perfectly.

so he decided that the disc drive needs replacing. so they've kept my mac for 7-10 days to replace my drive.

whilst i was there i also asked him about the problem many people were having with the left hand USB port on 15" MBP's. so he's going to replace that usb port too lol.

so i'll post back once i get my machine back and see how its working.
