Apple Mobile Device Support fails to install

I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit and I just installed iTunes 8. The Apple Mobile Device Support software failed to install (you could see it rolling back during the installation). I've tried removing everything (iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Updater) according to the instructions on the support site and then tried reinstalling with no luck again. I also tried running the mobile device support installer by itself but that didn't work either.

Please help, I need to get my iphone reconnected!

When you downloaded/installed iTunes, was it the 64-bit version of the installer that downloaded? I believe it's called iTunes864Setup.exe or iTunes64Setup.exe. If not, your browser didn't grab the correct installer (it would have downloaded the 32-bit version instead) which could lead to the issue you're having.

Out of curiosity, where are you downloading the Apple Mobile Device Support application from? I haven't yet seen a standalone installer for it.

Try creating a test user account on your computer:
1. Go to Control Panel > User Accounts
2. Click on "Manage Another Account"
3. Click on "Create new user"
4. Follow the prompts to create a new computer administrator
5. Restart the PC and log in to the new account

Once logged in to the new account, download a new copy of the iTunes installer file, and see if you can install it on that account, which should result in installation on all other accounts.

There is problems with the installer package in itunes 8 64 bit. If you extract the file you will get about 5 programs. When you install them separately you will find that itunes64 and mobile device will get windows installer error. This IS NOT a vista problem. It is a botched package issue with apple software engineers. Think about it……..one day they release a version and it results a blue screen for some and then they roll back some drivers and release another version maybe a bit too quick and ….wala…..you now have the end result of hasty programming. Call APPLE asap and ***** like ****…….also we need to ***** to ATT for a free no loss of our mins when calling apple for this sort of problem………….I spent 60 mins of my 450 talking to 2 tech and still got nowhere.

After a quick review of the thread... the original poster reported the issue on a 64-bit edition of Windows Vista. Your signature indicates you're running XP. The reason I bring this up is that according to support documentation, iTunes won't work with 64-bit XP. Your posts don't make specific mention of the specs of your OS. Can you confirm your OS to ensure compatibility?

Hey guys,

My OS is 64 bit. My points are that if you use us as testers then at least give us a line we can use that wont eat up our mins. Most people these days dont have an "additional" landline.

Also casper, please dont use the word likely if you are confident .....they just dont go together well.

This issue is not a Vista problem. I can easily open and run 32bit itunes8. My windows installer is fine and everyone else that gets this pop up is fine too. My concern is why is this working on so many other 64 bit vista machines. Can anyone explain a possible reason for this?

Perhaps it's a result of having T-Mobile for so long, or I'm just paranoid, but I'm used to my cell not being terribly reliable (where I live is also a factor) so I guess I hang on to the landline just in case I should need to make an emergency phone call, and just don't have the time to power cycle a mobile.

My confidence is a result of my never having an issue with Apple hardware/software that wasn't eventually resolved in some capacity. I'm not an Apple engineer, so I can't really come out and say "Apple will have a new copy of the installer file in 72 hours," now, can I?

I think the obvious suggestion is that perhaps there is an issue, if not life threatening or immediately evident, with the machines it won't work on. If the installer file is broken, I would think it wouldn't install on any computer, anywhere, ever. I don't think the issue is "You have Vista, you're screwed." I wouldn't really suggest that, because I don't think someone would shell out money for a machine with an OS that doesn't meet their wants and needs. And while Vista does have issues, so does XP and so does OS X.
