voicemail audio quality with 2.1 update

Just updated to 2.1, everything seems to work well except voicemail playback. The audio quality of voicemail playback is suddenly terrible, as if the data is being heavily compressed on playback. Never a problem with 2.0.2. I've tested and replicated this problem with EDGE and 3G, the problem is consistent.

Audio quality during calls seems fine, only voicemails sound awful.

Has anyone else encountered this issue with 2.1? Any solutions?

I have done a complete restore (3G OS v2.1.0) and still have the "tinny voicemail problem" that began as soon as I updated my 2 week old iPhone to 2.1.0 (shipped with 2.0.1 then updated to 2.0.2 immediately). Left feedback for Apple and ATT (for what it is worth). Interestingly, I just received my new BlueTrek METAL BT earset yesterday... I could almost not decipher a voicemail at all through the BT device!!!

My GF's 3G (3 weeks old) began experiencing the same VM problem since updating to OS v 2.1.0 4 days ago... And I have been querying colleagues that have updated this past week with about 9 out of 10 also complaining of this... appears to be a very common problem.

Is everyone that owns an iPhone an audiophile freak but me? My voice mails sound the same as everyone's saying but it's not like I can't understand the messages. It's not like I'm missing something important. It's not all that terrible and horrible and unacceptable as people are complaining about. IT'S VOICE MAIL. Unless most of you spend hours on hold listening to elevator music, what's the big deal? Lets concentrate on other issues that matter like 3G coverage or push mail or whatever. Not on the freaking fidelity of your voice mall.

And I don't know why people are going crazy and wasting time restoring.

Every problem is important, let's not diminish this voicemail issue. The fact is that the fidelity of voicemail playback on any other cell phone in the known world sounds better than iPhone 2.1, and that's not acceptable. Visual voicemail is a nice feature and it worked fine before, but Apple broke it in 2.1 and it should be fixed.

Don't cut Apple any slack, if any other phone had as many problem as iPhone has since its release you would have thrown it out the window by now.

I can hear all of my voicemails but it is rather annoying that all my messages sound like they were left but T-pain or Akon.

Peter, if it gets this much attention, then yes it is an issue. Personally if thats the way it always was then i'm going to have to live with it, but it was perfect before 2.1 and required no change so that all people are asking, just restore the way it was.

I agree that every problem is important but I'm saying that the decrease in VM quality doesn't really deserve this much attention. To me it doesn't even register as an annoyance.

I'm not cutting Apple any slack nor am I not an over zealots Apple fanboy. Like I stated, there are more important issues that need to be addressed.

It might something to do with the fact that I've had almost no problems with my iPhone. Little, and I mean little, hic-ups here and there so maybe my tolerance is higher because I'm not as frustrated as others. I still find it hard to believe that so many people are that upset over VM quality that really isn't all that bad. I'm not saying it's the best, or it's perfect. I'm saying it's VM and it works and it's fine for what it is.

This forum has definitely changed a lot over the last few years. I personally do not have issues with dropped calls, connections with my phone but I can imagine reading through posts of others who are having issues and posting comments like - "geez, mine works great, why don't you move?" or "geez, get a life, who cares..." etc. Or, "hey, you've only posted three times here, I doubt you even have an iPhone..." It would be a bit insulting to say the least.

A few years ago, I bought an office phone that had really lousy VM quality very similar to what we are experiencing now. I took it back for a refund and stated that the audio quality literally gave me a headache.

So, I've had an iPhone for 7 months now and then overnight, with one upgrade, my phone has the VM quality of a phone that I would return for a refund. But that isn't really an option. I do have the right to come here though and post my issue here with others who are experiencing the same problem.

If you iPhone works great, then great for you. It doesn't mean that others are not having issues and their concerns are not valid.

My VVM sounds fine - very good, actually. I am running 2.1, and tried it yesterday. I did call from an office wired phone in a quiet office environment, so that is the best case. So, we know it is not a problem for all phones.

For those who have tried to reset the phone and other things - did you also restore your third party apps? There is one posting where someone removed a third party app (white noise) which corrected the problem. That app does use sound, so perhaps it could be corrupting something.

Has anyone completely restored the phone, and not installed any new apps, and still has the problem?

Hey clay-walk (and to everyone else),
You did bring up something that I maybe didn't take into consideration. I was assuming that my VM quality was the same as others that are complaining about quality. Maybe mine isn't as bad that's why I was ranting because I couldn't understand their issue. I do acknowledge that I might of been a little harsh.

I'm here to help not to be insulting so I do appolgize for that.

Here's a question I'd like to pose. Has anyone here who is having voicemail issues as well as other problems (push, battery, Wi-Fi connections etc...), have you exchanged your phone for a new one through Apple either at the store or through Customer Care? The reason I ask is I just got off a lengthy call with Apple Tech Support and it seems like the voicemail issue is really sporadic, and they haven't been able to really identify what the problem is given that this is happening to some people, and not others. The person I talked to went on to say that three of his coworkers iPhone 3G's are working fine as far as voicemail and push e-mail goes, whereas one other coworker has the tinny/metallic voicemail issue that's been described here. A number of my co-workers have iPhone 3G's, and two of them are having the tinny voicemail problem, at this point. The one thing the guy said that kind of scared me was that since 2.1 just came out, it's probably going to be a while before a new software update is released.

This brings me back to my first question, i.e. getting a completely new phone. Maybe, just maybe, the voicemail issue could be tied to different manuafacture dates and/or factory locations. I don't know, just brainstorming here. That could possibly explain why some people are having problems and others aren't. I'm still convinced it's a software issue, but maybe there's a hardware component as well. Anyone care to chime in, especially those who have exchanged their iPhones for new ones?

Your apology notwithstanding--if it's not a big deal as far as you're concerned--then why the heck did you even bother reading this thread, let alone post a message in it? 😉

Back on topic--I too find the VM audio quality to be a bit more "muffled", for lack of a better description, when compared to pre-2.1. Is a big deal to me, when compared to other iPhone 3G-related issues--no; but I'm not about to tell someone else that they shouldn't consider it a big deal either.
