Podcast Continuously Out of Order in iPhone 2.1

Greetings,

I just updated my iPhone 3G firmware to 2.1 and it has altered the way podcasts play. When one podcast finished it now immediately starts the next.

This would ordinarily be an improvement, but all of my podcast episodes are listed from most recent (top) to oldest (bottom), and the iPhone insists on playing the next one in the list; which is backwards, since I always want to listen to podcasts from oldest to most recent.

Is there a way to either (a) stop the iPhone from immediately playing the next podcast, like the 2.0 software did, or (b) reverse the order in which podcast episodes are listed.

(b) would be the preferable solution, since I find it annoying to have to scroll down to the bottom of every podcast list to find the next episode to play.

I am very disapointed by this new feature. The whole layout shows promises but the fact that any (is it random?) podcast episode will be played after I'm done with the one I'm listening to, is a bad choice. There should at least be options:
a) queue with next
b) queue with previous
c) stop playing.

When could this be fixed? It's making my podcast experience a bit frustrating.

I must be the only person here that actually likes the feature of playing the next podcast after the one I'm listening to is finished especially if I'm catching up on a lot of one particular podcast. The only problem with the current solution is that the order is wrong iPhone and should be ordered chronologically from oldest to newest.

The work around is to just create a smart playlist in itunes and creating a few conditions like Genre is Podcast, Artist is <podcast name>, etc and order by date released which is what I've done for now.

Actually, I really like being able to play one podcast after another too and I had created several smart playlists to do so. I was then using the standard podcasts folders to be able to play podcasts one at a time. So, with this new "feature", I now have essentially 2 different methods to enable playing podcasts one after another, but no way to play them one at a time. Thanks Apple! ;-(

Just to add another customer's voice...

I agree wholeheartedly with the frustration caused by this change - and add my vote to the request to either return the default behaviour to as it was, or give the option to either stop after each episode or play through in chronological order.

In the meantime thank you for the tip on using a smart playlist as a work around.

Like others, I too 'discovered' this feature after accepting the 2.1 upgrade. My wife and I both find it infuriating. Like at least one other person in this thread, I listen to one of my favourite podcast episodes last thing at night, and this new feature of not stopping, but carrying on to a next episode, has ruined the pleasure of unwinding last thing before sleep. At the very least, this feature should be switchable.

Failing that, is there any way to revert to 2.0? When I click on 'Restore' in iTunes, it threatens to restore me to factory settings. I'd rather go to 2.0 and then wait for a 'fix' for this incredibly annoying nuisance.

It would be good if someone from Apple could comment, and offer either a workaround or a prognosis for a fix.

If I had wanted to listen to my podcasts without interruption I would have created a playlist for myself and that would have been simple enough.

Good idea on the smart playlist/Playlist to go... but BOO on the fact that we have to use this as an optional second and extra step considering that the previous method was quite good enough... I just don't understand the logic behind making someone listen to a new podcast and then moving on to a previously listened podcast right after... if you're going to do it this way apple... at least allow us to listen to a new podcast. I also want to say that after listening to a podcast from say CNET for 45mins I tend to want to move on to another type of podcast say from New York Times... and I want that option without having to hear the next new podcast from CNET... sounds fair to me ^_^

Funny that the thing that Apple is supposed to have down pat (music playback) is the thing that is most annoying to me on my iPhone.

Please, Apple:

1. Allow the sort order to be set, or just set it to where it goes from oldest to newest, rather than the other way around. It is a pain to deal with this.

2. Go back to having podcasts play one at a time, or make it a selectable preference. However, it would not be such a problem if you fixed problem #1.

Thank you.
