Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

iTunes drivers used for importing or burning CD's & DVD's are missing.

Ever since downloading iTunes 8.0, I receive a warning indicating that the iTunes drivers used for importing or burning CD's & DVD's are missing.

I've uninstalled and re-installed iTunes and everything Apple about 7 times now with no luck. I've download GEAR drivers, tried deleting registry upperfilters and everything I could possibly find on the support forums. Apple support hasn't been able to help me.

Can anyone tell me how I might be able to fix this? There is obviously some conflict with some drivers on my system. Everything in iTunes works fine, but the error message is killing me. Although, I haven't tried burning a CD with iTunes lately - maybe it doesn't work... I just want the error to go away.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I'm running Windows XP, SP3.

Thanks!
Ben

Good morning,
I just wanted to add my experience to the group.

After uninstalling iTunes multiply times to no avail, I went out and found this and another discussion group.
I followed everyone's advice, still no resolve.
Nothing was working, not the registry changes, the Gear drives, nothing.

Then, I noticed that my system wasn't recognizing my CD/DVD burners.
So, I decided to put my registry back to the original order it was in.
Then, what I did was uninstall , Gear drivers.
I restarted my system, and voila!!!!!!!
My system is not only back the way it was, but I can open and close iTunes without a single problem.

My theory is, that uninstalling the Gear drivers, forced my own system to look for the appropriate drivers it need to do it's job.

I hope this will help some of the rest of you.

Happy weekend!!!!!!!
Nancy

Okay.. Thanks to the guys at Gear, I figured "it" out. The problem is that for some reason, some of the registry keys are not gettign set correctly. Simply go in and create these key entries by hand if they are missing and the problem will go away.

HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-0 8002BE10318} GEARAspiWDM entry in the UpperFilters value. Note that the entries in this value are double byte.

In the HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6D807884-7D21-11CF-801C-0 8002BE10318} GEARAspiWDM entry in the UpperFilters value. Note that the entries in this value are double byte.

In the HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{CE5939AE-EBDE-11D0-B181-0 000F8753EC4} GEARAspiWDM entry in the UpperFilters value. Note that the entries in this value are double byte.

Windows\System32\GEARAspi64.dll value from the HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs registry key

Windows\System32\Drivers\GearAspiWDM.sys value from the HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs registry key

I've just finished fixing BOTH the error AND the burning functionality to iTunes after a few hours of trying this and that. Here is what worked for me:

1) Uninstall iTunes, but don't reboot your computer yet

2) Install the Gear Driver (see above)

3) Open regedit, create a Multi String Value in HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}, name it UpperFilters then double click it and type GEARAspiWDM and then press ENTER so that there is one new line before clicking OK.

4) UNINSTALL Gears - whatever changes it made to the registry when it installed are done, but then uninstalling it seems to be an important next step.

5) Reboot - this is a necessary step

6) Install a fresh version of iTunes

The order of the stages seems to play a big part, hope this helps.

The solution in the article worked for me. (Without downloading any drivers.)

If any Apple guy ever reads this:
I find it very confusing, that the first software I come across, that only works properly, if I fiddle around in the registry comes from Apple Comp.
Until now I regarded Apple as the company to provide the most user friendly products and software.
I am very disappointed, that this appears not to be the case any longer.

At last a solution to this niggling problem re iTunes 8 & CD/DVD drivers etc. -- steps followed exactly as outlined above and all fine: thank you.

As far as the disappearing CD/DVD drives goes, I had the same problem, but ... a solution !

If you uninstall both drives via Control Panel and then restart Vista, your PC will then reestablish the drivers it requires to 'find' the CD/DVD Drives. You should find that your optical drives now appear correctly in Explorer AND iTunes 8 is finally satisfied without any pop up error messages.... Good Luck!

ok...HELP!...i also have the same issue, however i followed the article Ben posted but I have one problem...regedit does not have the upper filters and i see no way to create the Multi String Value as done for Windows XP. Am I missing something along the way? My kingdom (albeit a small kingdom) for a solution to this issue...all I want is to be able to burn cd's again through iTunes...not too much to ask is it?
Thanks!

? Can you help? I am not sure which drives you are referring to at this point to remove? Itunes is now working without the error message but I still do not have my cd/dvd drive. When I open my control panel and look at my cd/dvd drive it has the yellow excamation warning box saying it does not recognize and I run the diagnostic on it and it says it is up to date? going crazy!!!!!!

iTunes drivers used for importing or burning CD's & DVD's are missing.
