System Preferences into trash

System Preferences on my desk top is it safe to put into trash.

Mac OS X (10.5.4)

O.K. David. That means you don't have an administrator's account. You can't change anything in that folder. My guess is that your nephew has such an account and that means that he will have to do it. In the meantime, maybe you can just put that icon in a corner of the desktop and live with it until he can come by and either get rid of it or move it where it's supposed to be. If it turns out that it is the working System Preferences, you would not be able to trash it without a password anyway. Sorry 😟

Not necessarily. He made reference to his nephew who was helping him and I suspect that the nephew is the guy who set him up.If so he may have set himself as admin so that David, who's a beginner, can't do anything harmful. That's what I'd do. In any case, having that file on the desktop may be an annoyance but not really a big deal. Nevertheless, I wouldn't try to get rid of it without knowing for sure that it's just a duplicate or alias. He has no backups.
