problems with pop mail fetching and application update after 2.1 firmware

Just curious if anyone is still having problems with pop mail fetching after the 2.1 update. I still have long stretches of time where no e-mail is received, and then when I manually fetch mail, I get the spinning wheel and connecting until I exit mail. Sometimes I can get mail after just closing mail, and other times, I have to do a soft reset.

Also, my application update still is not working. I had to remove the application from the iPhone before it would install, and then that was only after a sync with my macbook pro, and wouldn't do it directly on iPhone.

Thanks in advance for any potential solutions to these issues.

all of below sounds similar to issues i'm having since the 2.1 update. apple keeps telling me the problems are because i have comcast as my email server, but after three trips to apple genius bar, i have figured out how to get the phone to get email, but it entails jumping through a bunch of hoops (which is ridiculous). for me, going into sent & then into inbox will get the phone to try to connect, although i then sometimes have the "connecting" forever problem described by someone else below. Turning the phone off & on has worked every time. i can also send an email, which then seems to alert the phone to connect & fetch the mail. i don't think this is anyone's problem but apples' (and mine!)

I'm having the same problems. Phone won't fetch gmail now that I am running 2.1
I made no other changes to the phone or any settings ( I have checked the settings and they are all still correct ) but the phone will not fetch mail.

When I open the mail app it will happily go off and fetch mail manually but sadly it no longer seems to background fetch. Tthis is backed up by the fact that all of the mails will have timestamps which are way older than the time period set in my fetch settings ( 15 mins )

Very painful as I was running without any problems before the upgrade. Keen for a fix pronto

same thing....since 2.0, mail app just wont work like it is supposed to. IMAP, POP, anything just wont fetch like its should. The one thing i use most on my phone hasnt worked in months. I will get random emails here and there and then some that are sitting right in front of me on the computer and the iphone wont see them or just wont connect. Horrible.

A quick update.. Made a discovery a little bit ago which adds credence to the theory that this is related to the changes made in 2.1 to improve battery life.. Automatic Fetch simply does not work for me at all when on battery.. HOWEVER, with NO changes to my settings.. When I plug my phone into my charger, all of a sudden it starts fetching again.. Take it off the charger, it stops.. It is very repeatable for me.. Anyone else see the same thing? Did several tests with the phone on and off the charger.. And every time the results where the same.. No email alerts when on battery, Email alerts when plugged in.. Can we say BUG?

Plugged mine into the wall and it did it's autonomous first background fetch since moving to 2.1 ( won't fetch while on battery )

Maybe this is a battery feature !? If it is then I will be very very unhappy. I rate regular email polling as one of the highest priorities on my iPhone. I would rather charge it every night than save some battery life and have unreliable email

Yep, agreed this is a big issue in my book.. I can't have my phone plugged in all day, just to get alerts for new mail.. Kind of defeats the whole "mobile" part of mobile phone.. 🙂 I have confirmed, that at least in my case, the background fetch only happens when I have my phone plugged in.. I am none too pleased, Apple needs to come out with a fix fast.. Like sometime today! This a core function for a lot of people.

I have noticed the same thing with fetch while charging vs. on battery. Mine will fetch on the charger every 15 minutes like it always did (before 2.1) On battery (asleep) it will not fetch. If I leave it awake even just sitting on the home screen) on battery it will fetch too but that's not a fix -- just an observation that it will fetch if it stays awake. I does look like a developer got too agressive with the code for shutting down "unneeded" services when the phone is asleep on battery.

Mobile email notification is pretty much the one "must have" feature on a smartphone - it's why I have mine. Apple needs to get this working pronto.
