Downloads are not showing up in Download folder...

I have a three week old Macbook Pro. I know there is a Download default folder to the right of my dock. But I have noticed that the past few days, when I try to download something from email, the file does not show up on the desktop or in the Download file. When I click on the "Show in Finder" magnifying glass in the download window, it shows the file but it is unopenable. Any ideas on what has happened to cause this?

Thanks!

Sorry- not trying to be obtuse. My browser prefs do state that they should go into my Download folder. But they aren't. I use web based mail- being Yahoo Mail. I just tried again to download an attachment. It does not show up in the Downloads folder to the right of the dock. But when I go into the download window (showing that the download is complete), it allows me to click a magnifying glass that says "Show in Finder". THat opens a Download window that is housed under my User name and in there I can find the file. I just don't understand why they stopped going into the downloads folder down in the dock area, since that is supposedly the purpose of having that folder there.

Does this make sense? Thanks.

Thanks. When I click Download, it automatically starts the download. When I bought the computer, they told me downloads would automatically all show up in that folder (which they did initially). I'm not sure if I hit something to change that. But even when I see them in the Finder window, they are greyed out such that I can't even open them?
