How to open files with the trackpad?

Are you sure? Clicking should be the fourth box down from Trackpad Gestures.

Have you checked your Double-Click Speed settings? I am able to open folders by just clicking twice like you use to do.

How new is that MBPro? It appears that the preferences you have are different from mine and that they support the additional gestures (as on the Mac Book Air). Methinks you should try the box "Tap to Click" under the single finger gestures as the next items Dragging and Drag Lock are what follow the box I suggested earlier on mine.

If it doesn't work, turn it off and try something else.

If you have tap to click enabled, a double tap will open a file. You may need to adjust the double click speed (applied to double tap as well) to a slower setting - move the slider to the left and try it out in the testing box provided.

In the Keyboard and Mouse preferences (in System Preferences), about halfway down the Trackpad panel, is a box marked, "Clicking." Check that and that should give what you want.
