What is the bit depth of the iphone screen?

The only information I can find online says it's 24 bit, but just looking at it, I don't think that's right. For example, I am drawing a grayscale color ramp on the screen in GL. In the simulator, it looks correct, but on a real phone, it looks heavily contoured, like I'm only getting 16~32 levels of gray.

many LCD screens both large and small support only 262k colors, which instead of 8/8/8 bits per channel are really 6/6/6 bits per channel; you have just proven what apple doesn't want anyone to know! Anyway 262k still looks pretty good, and if you dither you can generate basically the same colors, the dots are so small dithering won't be caught.

It makes the processing way faster and saves memory too.
