2 iPod touch 16 g same problem... wondering if I should return or wait for patch. Skips are random and when rewound, doesn't skip at the same place. Hope its not hardware. What are you guys thinking?

I can say just the same as you!

It's beginning to look like the iPT just isn't decompressing the data fast enough. There is only two possibilities that I can think of, that would apply. 1. the processor in the iPT is not up to it, (not likely) or 2. The digital decoder needs to be patched, (which seems more likely.)

Same problem here, Touch 2G 32GB.
I hope this is a software error...

Have the same issue with my 2G ipod with lossless, but it seems like the skipping occurs when the screen switches itself off. thats when the music seems to start skipping at irregular intervals for me.

=( its prob a software issue but i could be wrong.

    Hello,

The same thing with my 2G 16 GB touch. I noticed it happens when one touches the hold key to switch the touch screen off. Unless you do that there is no skipping. Not much of a help, I know. But maybe someone will now come up with a solution.

    Thanks,

it also only does that with acc format converted to lossless. On burned CDs it works just fine in apple lossless. I suppose some protection software might be kicking in.

I'm pretty certain the issue is software related as the buffer mush be set to be lower when the screen is turn off and not a hardware fault as ALAC does not skip when the screen is on. "Setting - General - Auto-Lock never" It kills the battery but it is a work around until a new firmware is released. I hope the fault get fully resolved soon.

Same problem on 2nd generation touch and lossless. To get this fixed call Apple support and insist on speaking with a IPOD "product expert." I did that a week ago and he told me they are well aware of the issue and think they know what causes it. They are working on a solution and promise it will be part of the next IPOD Touch software update. But they could not say when that will be.
As soon as you get through to Apple ask for a product expert. Do not let them waste your time on a restore of your Touch.
The more people who call, the more pressure they will feel to get this fixed.

I have the same problems with my 8G ipod Touch 2G running 2.1.1. After testing and listening to music for about 12 hours I can conclude that:

    1) There is no skipping problem with apple lossless tracks when the screen is on use for web browsing, applications, photo, etc.

    2) When the ipod touch screen is dark in lock mode, there are skipping problems with all Apple lossless tracks.

    3) There are no problems with MP3 tracks whether the screen is on or not.

This is definitely a bug that Apple needs to address.

    Hello,

I have a first generation iPod touch and no lossless files so I cannot encounter this problem.

For those who do not know, first generation iPod touches only have 2.1 firmware, whereas the new ones have 2.1.1.

This takes me back to the problem with the first generation iPod touches - music and videos would delete themselves but still occupy space. This problem was fixed with the 2.1 firmware. Apple is APPARENTLY releasing a 2.1.1 firmware on November 5, and this MAY fix the problem. Since second generation iPod touches already have a 2.1.1, I do not know whether it will still be under the same number, or maybe all will be 2.1.2. We will just have to wait.

My advice would be to wait for this update, see if the problem is fixed, but if it is not, contact Apple (apple.com/support). The more people who complain about this, the higher chance Apple will fix this problem faster.

    Good luck to all!

I have a FIRST generation iPod touch and haven't experienced this problem until the latest upgrade of iTunes. The last major update of iTunes worked fine and it wasn't till this last little update that I started getting this problem. So must be iTunes...

Hey CrookedCarrot - Did you happen to also upgrade your iPod to the 2.1 software update at that time? If not, what software (it should be firmware to me, but whatever) version are you currently running on your 1st Gen Touch?? Also, are you just having the problem w/Apple LossLess files???

Wow am I glad to see this thread! Definitely a Gen2 Touch bug!

I bought a 16GB Gen2 Touch last Sunday and immediately noticed my CD ripped Apple Lossless tracks were glitching / dropping out randomly during playback. I went through the whole restore process to be sure. I also confirmed that the same tracks played flawlessly on my 4GB iPod Nano. By Monday I figured I had a faulty Touch.

Phoned the support line, described the problem, and they immediately gave me a reference number to take back to the retailer to exchange for another one.

Finally got back to the shop tonight (late night trading) and swapped my Touch for a new one. I got home and tested it and was so frustrated that the new one had the exact same fault. It was about now that I realized this must be a bug in the Gen2 Touch, so headed for Google to immediately find this thread.

This bug is so bad it makes the Gen2 Touch totally unusable for lossless music playback. As all my ripped CD music is lossless it is basically unusable to me as a music player.

Not sure whether to demand a refund, or trust that this bug is fixable in software - and a fix is coming soon???
