I just purchases an 8 Gig Nano (4th Generation), and when I dock it with my Ipod HiFi a screen pops up and says that the device does not support charging. What? Thats lame!!! It still plays and can be controlled with my remote, but it wont charge. You would think that they are both APPLE products that they would work TOGETHER. PLEASE FIX THIS
I noticed this today too... and I really think Apple needs to add this support in a firmware update or something. We paid good money for the iPod Hi-Fi, Steve swore by the thing, and now we can't fully use it. Something just isn't right about that. Apple I hope you're listening...
I have the same problem with my 4th gen Nano. I have hundreds tied up in car chargers for my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen Nanos. If Apple does not fix this issues, my 4th gen Nano will be my last Ipod!!!
There is speculation that someone will make an "adapter" to provide a workaround, and there is a link to one company that was shipping something like this, but otherwise you are going to have to see if your car chargers will offer an upgrade. I'm waiting for an upgraded BMW cable.
There is no "fix", so Apple won't be forthcoming with anything, so I guess this is your last iPod.
also got an Apple HiFi and still can't believe that my nano won't charge...
There should be a big sign on the new product "won't work with following apple products:"
Does anyone knows if the last nano was compatibly with the Hifi?
I am putting the sound quality as the priority, of course, I understand your frustration.
I am going to find a solution and not sure whether it works or not ..
Using an iPod dock (it has to be compatiable with the new Nano, iPhone and iTouch), connecting it with the back of the iPod HiFi - input. Then the iPod should be get charged and play music with the iPod HiFi
I am so disppointed, why apple becomes a fool that the accessories can't be charged the Nano 4th!
finally, I found a silly way to charge my ipod with my Hifi.
Just plug in the USB to your computer and your Hifi together. Then it would be charged and play at the same time.
But i hope they will have the new firmware to fix this problem right away.
I am in the same boat with a 4th gen Nano and as it will not recharge in any of the 3 speaker docks nor my VW car with factory built in approved Apple ipod dock I have sent the stupid Nano back to Apple for a refund. I too after all these years will switch from Apple to a more reliable, dependent designer and manufacturer. Such a shame but Jobs has screwed it and me big time and for the last time.
I was hoping the Touch was not affected and would have bought one of those instead but this message chain says the Touch is similarly affected.
How does one get in touch with Apple directly. Their web site is awful.
Although I am a loyal Apple customer, the situation with ipods not working in their full capacity with other apple products is going to force me to not recommend new ipods to people until Apple gets their act together.
I am keeping the 4g Nano that I just bought, only in hopes that this issue is remedied, although I am not counting on it, considering they already built a screen image that states that "charging is not supported with this accessory". This sounds like a hardware issue, rather than a software issue.
It is a hardware issue, as I stated in my second post. The only remedy is to acquire an adaptor that will work with the older device, or buy devices that don't charge with the firewire pin.
There are 30 pins on the dock connector that have specific functions. On previous iPods (prior to the 5th Generation and Nano) there were pins for the firewire cable that transferred data, a status pin for information regarding the status of the sync/charge, and a pin for conducting a 12V charge via firewire.
Beginning with the two I mentioned above, and including the 1st (and apparently 2nd) Generation Classic, 2nd and 3rd Generation Nanos, 1st Generation iPhone and 1st Generation Touch no firewire chip was included in the iPod so you could no longer transfer data via the firewire cable, but you could send a charge via the cable through the firewire charging pin(s) and into the iPod.
Starting with the iPhone 3G, and including the 4th Generation Nano and 2nd Generation Touch, you can no longer charge the iPod via the 12V firewire pin.
