Real instrument track plays back too slow, but only with m-audio mobile pre

OK, I am having a really strange problem that just cropped up.

I have a song with a loop for the rhythm track and a "real instrument" track as well. The real instrument was recorded using a mobile pre (m-audio) and was in total sync with the loop when recorded and afterwards. I could of course change the tempo and both would change in sync.

Tonight I wanted to add another track and so turned on the mobile pre and garage band. For the first time, the real instrument track already recorded played back very slowly (about 70% of the true speed) and totally out of sync with the rhythm loop. This was observed by monitoring via the mobile pre headphone jack. When I disconnected the mobile pre, quit and restarted GB without the mobile pre, both tracks played back perfectly as recorded, i.e. no slowing of the real instrument. I then reattached the mobile pre, GB recognizes it, and when I play back the tracks, again the real instrument track plays back out of sync at a very slow rate (~70% of the original recorded speed). This is, needless to say, frustrating. Does anyone have any idea why the mobile pre seems to be screwing up the speed of playback (whereas it recorded it just fine).

Thank you in advance.
