A newer version of QuickTime is already installed.

Looks like this may be a common error / question that hopefully someone has a solution for.

I've got over 600 systems (Windows XP) with QT 7.4.5.67 installed. Over the weeked I attempted to deploy QT 7.55.90.70 and they all failed with an error

"A newer version of QuickTime is already installed."

The msi installer log clearly shows it the versions the programs sees:

PROPERTY CHANGE: Adding QTINFO.EXISTINGQTVERSSTR property. Its value is '7.4.5.67'.
PROPERTY CHANGE: Adding QTINFO.CURRENTQTVERSSTR property. Its value is '7.55.90.70'.

Has anyone come up with a way around this short of unistalling QT and reinstalling it?

Same error message. I have cleaned the registry, uninstalled QuickTime, emptied temp folders and recycle bin, deleted Quicktime folder from Program Files, downloaded both Itunes8 upgrade and Quicktimes 7 and still the error appears. How can I have a newer version installed when I just downloaded the latest version?

Prior to upgrade itunes was working just fine. Now it isn't working at all. Lesson learned: If it is not broken don't fix it.

I had the same problem once, and I think it was because I installed another codec package also capable of running Quicktime. It seemed that Quicktime recognized the codec package as a newer version of it self. When I removed the package and reinstalled Quicktime it seemed to work again...

I must admit that Im not completely confident about this - maybe I accidently did the same as bktx suggests.

I can get the package with my custom mst file to install if i manually run it via command line. If i then add it to SMS for deployment, which runs under the system account it thinks it has a newer version installed. if i run it under the user context from SMS it also thinks there is a newer version installed. When building a brand new pc with only XP SP3, Office 2003 SP3, Media Player 11 and the latest flash player and shockwave player, it again thinks there is a newer version installed. I was able to get it to install under the user context via SMS by removing the Launch Condition sequence from the msi's execute table. This however is not wise as if there is a newer version installed it will attempt to overwrite it in future. Even though removing that condition allowed it be installed under user context from SMS, it still fails when running under system account for new builds. This is very frustrating and there seems to be no way to get an answer out of apple.
