After 10.5.5 update, Macbook LCD not working but external monitor is good

After installing the update via Software Update to 10.5.5, the Macbook restarted but the LCD is showing up with a white background and nothing else.

Plugging in an external monitor, everything is ok.

Has something in the updated affected the LCD?

Thanks

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Further to the above, I used an external to see the display setting and can see that the LCD has defaulted to 800x600 resolution which explains the white screen.

However, looking at the list of available resolutions, the native 1280x800 is not available and the closest one is 1280x768 resulting in the bottom part of the LCD becoming fuzzy but the rest is ok

Does anyone know a way to fix this?

Thanks

Same problem except in reverse. After applying 10.5.5 update my external monitor won't work. My MacBook display works fine but it won't recognize the external display I had connected to it when it restarted. I connect to a 22" Hanns-G monitor with a mini DVI connector. I have tried all of the external display troubleshooting methods I can find with out success. Help Apple.

Sometimes a PRAM reset is all that is necessary to resolve an odd HW problem

Same here... after upgrade to 10.5.5, external monitor no longer works with MacBook. DVI connection to a Sceptre X20. The MacBook's screen works fine, as expected.

Also, Apple needs to update the support page - there's no selection in the OS for 10.5.5, so I chose 10.5.4.

Note to self - next time, don't upgrade the day of the release. Let someone else find the bugs.

Thanks

It usually takes a day or so for the OS selection to be updated.

Good idea. I always read the posts before proceeding. And I use the full combo update.
I have 3 boxes, so I update the one I use the least first. Of course, I have a full backup using TM, so there is nothing to really lose except the reinstall time which happens by itself.

Nerowolfe - thanks for the suggestion. However... PRAM reset didn't fix it. Although, I can't be sure I did it right - there was no feedback. I disconnected power, removed the battery, and held down the power for 5 seconds (10 to be sure). No change - the external monitor is still not recognized.

So, I tried connecting the monitor with the VGA connector. And it worked...

However, this is not a solution (VGA <= DVI). Did my DVI connector "coincidentally" stop working, or is there a bug in 10.5.5? I'll have to wait until I get to my office tomorrow to debug the monitor and the DVI connector.

Thanks again

I've been getting no external display since updating to 10.5.5 as well.

I reformatted/reinstalled from the DVD and everything worked fine....then, of course, got curious and updated again and borked the display. Now, as before, I'm getting LCD but no external (dvi) display. This is messed up. Having an external display is what makes this machine feasible to use as a primary box. Now it might as well go to grandma for checking her email.

Anyway, don't bother reinstalling OSX unless you're not going to update to 10.5.5. Hopefully we get a patch for this asap.

Same here external monitor wont work with macbook through dvi
however i found a temporary fix: boot up with the external monitor DISCONNECTED and connect it after osx completely loads up. works about 90% of the time for me.
I know that its a drag but at least it lets you use your external Monitor until Apple fixes this

Having just installed the 5.5 update on my MacBook, the display on my IIyama remote monitor has gone completely psychedelic. I use this all the time for DTP applications and it's dead in the water so far. No problems with the MacBook but now I'm wondering where I go from here. I've tried reinstalling the Combo version but the problem still remains. I did however try altering the screen resolution in Preferences and it is only when using either 1280 x 960 or 1280 x 1024 that the screen goes psycho. Unfortunately I need to use 1280 x 1024 as I have been since I bought the Macbook. I'm using 4 Gbs Ram incidentally. Can anyone help please - I have commercial work to get on with!

Hi - resetting the PRAM did not work. It has removed the Macbook's ability to previously being usable in 1280x768 resolution whereas now, the LCD flickers constantly and I need to use an external screen.

Is there another work around?

I have tried to reinstall Leopard but when it reboots - I can't see what I am doing as it is displayed on the LCD which just flickers.
