iTunes Freezing after 10.5.5 update.

After running the OS X software update seeded today, iTunes is freezing whenever I am on the iTunes store. I cannot force quit and I also lose control of the mouse after a couple of minutes. I have to force a restart by holding the power button down for several seconds. It has happened 4 times and now I am afraid of going to the online store. Anyone experiencing this problem? I am using iTunes 8.0 BTW. This is the first time I have had to force restart my computer or had iTunes freeze on me.

How do I fix this?

Hey Elwood,

We can find out if its something in your iTunes library by testing with an alternate library as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589

If it is a iTunes Library issue, try re-creating the library as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

You can also try pulling the iTunes plist files from ~/Library/Preferences. Just quit iTunes> launch Finder> click Go in the top menu bar> Home> Library> Preferences, drag the com.apple.iTunes* files to the trash, then relaunch iTunes.

I'm ignorant on certain issues or advanced computing, but after another freeze today I have to be more proactive. My question is, what will deleting the plist do to my iTunes and what will I have to reset or rebuild? I have 3 libraries under one user on my system (for multiple iPods and people). I refuse to rebuild my libraries as the only things I have backed up are my iTunes purchases (my Time Machine drive is dead and I have to repurchase one). I really don't want to have to reimport 100's of CDs so will deleting the plist (preferences?) cause this? Someone let me know please. I would rather just stay off the store to be honest, even though I'll miss it.

Deleting the .plist file will reset all of the iTunes preferences. You will not have to import any music to iTunes again. iTunes uses the files in the iTunes Library folder to organize and see the music that was already imported.

This article will provide general information about .plist files.

O.K. I've tried deleting the iTunes plist and it seemed to fix the problem for awhile. But, eventually it will crash again, so I'm sure that this isn't the fix. I also cleared my Store purchased playlist and got rid of almost all my other playlists. The only playlists I have left are smart playlists and one regular, all of which should only see content that's truly in my library. iTunes still crashes. I believe now that it's simply a bug in iTunes that apparently only affects some machines.

For the starts/freezes/won't force quit issue, what I did was reboot and hold down the option key to create a new iTunes library. However, the problem returned the next time I tried to launch iTunes. I downgraded to 7.6.2 and haven't had any problems since-other than the fact that I cannot backup or sync my iPhone anymore (wrong version).

My Mac Mini is pretty much as it was when I bought it other than VMware Fusion 2 and Software Updates. I think this is something Apple will have to fix on their end once they admit they have a problem.
