New iPod randomly skipping songs

I got a new iPod classic 120GB, replacing my old 60gb. I loaded it up with my songs and stuff, and started using it, but after a while it skipped to next song halfway through a song. This happened a few times, and once the ipod even restarted itself (after displaying a low quality 8bit colour apple logo image). I then restored my iPod, and checked for latest software, and it seemed to be better for a while, but it just skipped a song again.

I'm pretty sure all the song files are mp3, but maybe some AACs. Songs that skipped played fine other times. iPod hasn't been dropped since I got it... I guess I have to take it to an apple center for warranty... Does anyone elses new 120GB skip songs?

Thanks
Rodger

Well, an update. I went to return my iPod for a new one, same version. This one doesn't seem to have the problem. Again, with the problematic iPod that skips songs part way through, the backlight fix DID work. This new one doesn't need that.

So a suggestion would be, if you have an iPod that does this frequently... return it as many times until you get one that's good.

So, I haven't seen a resolution, so I'll add my config to the mix:

1. iPod Classic 80GB
2. Windows XP
3. iTunes 8.2 (and it happened with previous versions as well)
4. iPod Software: 1.1.2

Problem: syncing my Ipod resulted in random songs being truncated and/or altered in such a way that it wouldn't play the entire song. Some I could fast forward thru and it would then play, others - no such luck. It is definitely not the same song(s) every time. I've reset and resynced and it simply changed the song(s) that were problematic. This problem has been going on since I got my iPod Classic.

I have found that if I find a song that is troublesome, I remove it from the iPod library, resync, then re-add it...then resync again...and that song is 95% of the time fully synced and not a problem anymore. The problem for me is - if I have 8,000 songs on my iPod, I have no idea how many problematic songs I have on it.

I look forward to the day where I can sync my iPod and not fear that a ton of songs have problems..but rather, I can play it worry-free.

Same problem here, brand new iPod Classic 120GB (black), skipping songs at random times at random offsets..

Seems to me that as soon as the decoder hickups (due to internal HDD failure (bad sectors, whatever) or due to MP3 file corruption), the iPod skips to the next song, instead of trying again 1 block further on..

I'm gonna go back to the Apple store and get my money back I think :/ This is just rediculous...
It's a freakin' IPOD CLASSIC! All it does is play music..

Add another one to the list...I just got a 120 gb ipod classic over the weekend and songs are skipping all over the place for me. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it is very annoying. There's no way that I am going to pull over 400 cds out of storage and re-rip them. This just reminds me of why I would never update my 60gb Video - which is still working fine by the way.

I have the same 2 problems! The "annoying-as-anything-skipping-randomly-for-no-apparent-reason-because-it-can't -seem-to-handle-life" problem, and the "wheel-is-so-insensitive-that-the-middle-button-needs-to-be-pressed-which-only- causes-the-scroll-through-song-with-scroll-wheel-thing-to-pop-up-before-it-will- let-me-adjust-the-freaking-volume" problem.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL PRODUCT APPLE... NOT!!!

I think they are spending a little too much time making their iPhone all perfect and wonderful and not enough time making sure the new versions of their previous products are functioning without so many glitches. Correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe that my reason for buying an iPod is so that I can fill my ears with limitless hours of the unending wonderfulness that comes from my iTunes Library; I remember nothing about purchasing an useless piece of flashy-looking metal that serves no purpose other than making others think that I am listening to music so that I do not have to socialize with anyone on the subway.

I am taking this piece of garbage back to the Apple store this weekend and asking for a new one.

Okay, I have a Nano so I don't know if this applies to Classic but I thought I would just tell you about how my problem has been resolved.

I went to the Apple Store in Cherry Hill, NJ and the Mac Genius I talked to there told me that there's a setting on the iPod that causes the iPod to skip to the next song when it is in shuffle mode and shaken. He told me that if you go into the settings menu and then go into the playback menu, there will be a thing in there called "Shake" if you turn that off, it won't do this anymore.

Might be worth a shot, guys.

Hi, I noticed my apple skips music as well, randomly as at most cases.
What is funny when I rewind "skipped in the middle" song it plays it without skipping. So below my questions?
ok, what is a warranty process?? is the warranty granted on this issue?
any possibility to get money back?
I have used a simple 2GB MP3 player "pendrive" and never occurred anything similar.
Can anyone please advise?

forgot to mention Ipod Classic 120GB black

Add my POC 120gb classic to the list. Apple is ignoring the problem and those who have gotten a replacement or sent it in to apple get it back with the same problem. Ipod is 8 mo old but has skipped since it was new. not bad at first but seems to be alot worse now and some days it will play for hours with no problem. Now the POC wants to reset in the middle of play with a weird color apple logo. Resyncing helps for maybe a day then it starts all over again. I now carry my 3 yr old 30gb as a back up untill I can get home and waste more time trying to get this unreliable POC to work like it should. And yes the 30 is playing the exact same files made from my cd collection. I never download music so it is not a problem with corrupt files. Only when they are played thru the 120 do I have nightmares. Resisting the urge to squash it like a bug. Don't think I will be buying from apple again as they ignore the problem. Oh yea and the music from my 30 sound better than the 120 which makes them sound at times like they have a problem with bass and at times crackle. Nice work apple.

Am just adding to this thread to try make it more obvious to Apple the hundreds of us with this problem.
Got a 120GB iPod classic in August and it's skipping every 4 or 5 songs. Hundreds of songs on there so don't want to have to reload whole lot. However even new stuff i put there from CD (as MP3) is skipping.
Please can we get a fix, i need to use the iPod to DJ and can't if it's skipping - may have to find an alternative! Grrr...

I was going to the same problem and it was beginning to be annoying. However after searching the web today for a resolution, i finally found one. Im pretty sure it has something to do with the ipod not playing mp3 files etc (I'm not an expert so i cant speak on it) but *_converting the skipping song to AAC or creating an ACC version definitely works!_* 150% ***** that you have to do it to alot of the songs that wont play. but just do multiple songs at once and set it and come back to it later. for those that dont know how to convert to AAC simply right click and choose the option. I hope this works for you as it did for me. 🙂
