Brother 2170W "printer offline" error?

After installing 10.5.5 I can't print from my Brother 2170W. I do not have the wireless option active - it is plugged in to a USB port.

When I try to print a document or a test page, it tells me that the printer is offline. When I run the utility, it tells me that it is connected. Not sure what is going on.

I ran disk permissions. Any suggestions??

Yes, the printer adds itself whenever I plug it in via USB. I have two (yes two) brother printers that use the same driver (HL-2040 and MFC-7420), same on both.

When I browse to localhost:631, I see the CUPS page right away. If I then browse to /printer, safari eventually errors this:

"Safari can’t open the page “ http://localhost:631/printers/”. The error was: “Operation could not be completed. (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 302.)” (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork:302) Please choose Report Bugs to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message."

Fix does not work for me either - no option for "Unknown USB" in the dropdown menu after selecting the printer. I also just upgraded to 10.5.5 and experienced the same rude shock of my USB-connected Brother DCP-7020 ceasing to print. Yesterday it worked great, now the utility says it is "offline".

On bootup, there is some kind of "serverINIT failure" related to printing.

I did not see the 'Unknown USB' option until I used the 'reset printing system' option in Printers under System Preferences.

THANK YOU! It worked! (xoxoxoxo - you saved my butt)

I did exactly as you said:
1) Under my Mac's System Preferences/Print & Fax, I control-clicked on the list of printers to the left and "Reset Printing System" popped up, so I clicked it. It removed all my printers from the list.

2) I connected (via USB) to my Brother DCP-7020 laser printer.

3) I went to "http://localhost:631/printers/” and under Brother DCP-7020 (which it recognized) I clicked the button to "Modify Printer".

4) On the next screen, "Brother DCP-7020 USB (Brother DCP-7020)" already showed in the drop down menu. The next screen showed MAKE "Brother" (I clicked Continue), and then the next screen MODEL/DRIVER "Brother DCP-7020 CUPS (en)" in a list (I clicked Modify Printer) and then the final screen said, "Printer Brother DCP7020 has been modified successfully." and returned to the initial screen.

5) I clicked on "Test Print" and it came out.

DONE and FIXED.

I’m running 10.5.5 on a Macbook Pro with wireless and a Brother 2070N connected to a wireless router via ethernet.

Here's what worked for me.

I reset my printing system. I downloaded and installed the brother printer drivers update 1.1 from Apple.

I restarted the computer.

I logged into my router and obtained my printer's IP address.

I added the printer by clicking the "+" (add printer) button in the print & fax pref pane.

Then, I clicked on the IP button, and chose IPP in the "Protocol" drop down menu.

Next, I entered my printer's IP address in the "address" field.

OS X immediately chose the proper printer and driver to use.

Click Add and you should be done.

Printing works again and all is well in HooVille.

Hope this helps others.

Doesn't work for me, unfortunately...
Get to the end of the "Modify printer" allright, but when prompted with the Username and password, nothing works.
I have an admin session, I know my password, yet none is accepted and I keep being prompted with the pop-up box.
Any idea why it might not be working? I just got the printer and it is quite annoying not to have it working!
Thanks for your help

This isn't much help, but Brother just has not caught up with OS 10.5. In fact the company is way behind. The latest driver download on its website for HL5050 (which I use) is OS 10.4.
I suspect this negligence is why everyone is having so much trouble.

Actually... the only problem I had was on my MFC-440CN, which stopped printing when I moved to 10.5.5. And which started printing again once I deleted the printer from System Preferences/Print & Fax and then re-added it. I didn't have to reinstall drivers or start up CUPS from the CUPS control page (<127.0.0.1:631>...) or anything. I also have a HL-2070N, which never stopped working. Both are connected using Ethernet, and have fixed IPs on my local network. And when the 440 was refusing to print, it did scan normally, over the network.
