iPod Touch freezes while playing music then goes to home screen. HELP!!

I JUST got my 32gb iPod Touch last week, and it only started recently to do this. I will play songs from my playlist, it will go through about 4 songs, then right when it switches, the screen freezes, music stops, and it goes to the home screen. Does anyone know what is going on?? I read that some users had this problem when they had too many applications open, but all I am doing is playing music. Any help would be appreciated!

Mine is set up like yours (music only), behaves slightly differently, but freezes just the same. Screen black while playing (normal), hit the home button to change something, and, as it tries to change from coverflow to list view, it freezes, ultimately quits. Last weekend, Apple replaced it under warranty with a refurb. Fine for a few days, but the refurb did it today. Frustrating.

The genius thought accelerometer and so swapped for the new one. Nope. Probably software but no clue what it might be. My music is all legal, combo of iTunes, MP3s and songs from CDs.

I too would be grateful for help.

I am having approximately the same issue with a new 32GB 2G iPod Touch where scrolling through the albums in cover flow exits to the home screen (I don't even need to be playing any of the songs). I have read that it may be related to the limited amount of memory that is in the iPod and the amount of album/cover it has to load. I only sync'd my music (29GB)to the iPod yesterday and have the issue today. It looks like if you reboot your iPod (hold down the top power button), the problem goes away for a while. My guess is we won't know if it is a memory issue unless we can monitor how much is being used actively in cover flow.

I had the same trouble w/ my iPod Touch 16GIG Gen 1 & it seemed to be worse after upgrading the software/firmware to Version 2.1; to the point where I was arranging to get it back to The Apple Store before it was 30 days old. The trouble seems to be worse as I approached 14GIG's of filled memory. I mostly have audio, but a few movies are loaded also. But I couldn't view the album art from end to end & it would also freeze & go back to the home screen after about 5 seconds of audio from an audio track intermittently. It was frustrating.

I used the HOME button on the top of the iPod to shut it down {holding it till the 'slide to power off' screen comes up & then doing the slide. Then using the HOME button to turn the iPod back on - seeing the cracked white apple when it reboots & starts back up. I haven't had any more trouble in iTunes. Maybe this reboot cleans up the memory of the iPod & a fresh reboot gives the OS a clean bill of health to look at the 14 GIGs of content that I've added in.

Give the Home button a try & let us know.

Best of Luck-
Doug

My experience with this problem seems to have evolved a bit. After resetting the iPod Touch (button at top), so far coverflow has not dumped me back to the home screen (although I do use coverflow sparingly since the problem first happened). However, now random album cover art is not displayed on the iPod Touch. 2 different variations of this occur. 1) It shows up as just a black screen unlike albums without cover art where it has the music note. 2) It shows up with the music note no album cover art default. When I look at the iPod from iTunes, all the album cover do show correctly. Has anyone noticed this happening?
