Apple Logo of death!

Gents,
I am not a technical person...! I have an iPhone 3g and I love it. I have never had a problem until this evening (itwould be while I am away!). It turned itself off and now I have been staring at the Apple Logo screen for a couple of hours. I have had a scan of the forumsbut I cant tell the difference between back ups/restores/syncs etc. I have tried hooking it up to itunes and the laptop but it wont even recognise. I dont care about the stuff that is on there, I just want to be able to uphone. I have synced it to itunes in the last couple of days so I assume all the info will be there. So how do I do it? How do I make it work? Help User uploaded file

You need a working phone, in its current state it will not do anything.

Normally I'd say take out the battery but one cannot do that with the iPhone so you need to try the hard reset.

Push the power button and the start/ HOME button at the same time. This should restart the iPhone. If you can't do this, then it's a tech issue for support, those geniuses, I guess.

have you tried a hard re-set? Hold down the power button and home button down together until the screen turns off, usually this will show the slide to power off would appear and you continue to hold until the screen re-freshes, but in your case I would just persevere until the screen reacts. If this doesn't work then I am not sure... Good luck.

Hi Rory... sorry you've come unstuck. You're not alone!

There are various threads that may be of help. In the end I managed to kcikstart my phone after the Apple Logo of Death âš  by following advice I found on here... connect the phone to your computer. Do a hard reset by holding both power and home buttons down until the Apple logo comes up - then continue to hold down for a good while yet... it'll reboot either once or twice and with luck iTunes will then recognise the phone and offer you the chance to restore.

Then if you're really lucky you may be able to restore from your last backup. I wasn't so lucky - it told me that my backup was either corrupt or wasn't compatible with my iPhone.

It may also be worth scanning the forums further before you give up on your data by doing a hard reset... seems that there may be a magic combination of keystrokes that can temporarily revive the phone for at least long enough to get off your valuable photos etc...

Hope this helps a bit! At least you know you're not on your own anyway!

Gents, many thanks for all your responses. Nice to know its not just me. I did think I had cracked it. I plugged it in, pressed the home and power button and held while it cycled through. I tunes recognised it and told me that I had to restore it and upgrade to 2.1. Downloaded that and hit restore! Then it lulled me into a false sense of security. Made out that it was fixing the problem... Cunning!! Then it stopped. It cant restore it because of an unknown error 1611 (if its unknown then why does it have a number?). So I am admitting defeat. I shall take it back to the store at the weekend and spend the rest of the week adapting to mobile phone free living!!

Thanks for all the advice... Will definitely come back here when I have my next problem!!!

Hi RoryPhillips,

The tips in this article will resolve most restore issues.

If iTunes continues to give the 1611 error, the iPhone may need hardware repair. Make a reservation to have a Genius at a local Apple retail store take a look at it or call AppleCare.
