Thanks for the quick reply! I am glued to this forum for the rest of the night! I can't concentrate on anything else.
Anyway, changed the resolution from my current to 800X600, etc back and forth a couple of times but no luck. I tried to see if the changing the number of colors does anything but it just makes the lines blue and worse.
Thanks you for your reply though!
Applications and internet windows look normal, just fine, but anything related to an icon or anything that I move around has the lines around that follow it.
Did this just happen after you upgraded to 10.5.5? What kind of video card do you have and exactly what PowerMac are you using? What kind of monitor?
It's possible reseating your video card would help. It's also possible that resetting the PRAM and/or pressing the PMU reset button might help. I would try the latter two before the first.
Do you have an external drive you can back up to by any chance, preferably a Firewire disk? Do you have an additional internal drive?
You could try starting up in safe mode also to see if it makes the lines go away. If they do that would mean some kind of system conflict.
Thanks again for your assistance, Samsara!!
I am using a G5 that had Tiger before. I recently upgraded to Leopard.
I think a few days ago I upgraded to the 10.5.5 via a Software update, but it was working just fine after that. I just turned on the computer now and I had this problem...
I am using a 15" Sony LCD screen which is 5 years old. The video card is ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.
I don't have an backup drive to use with Time Machine, but I am gonna get one for sure.
I tried the PRAM reset method but it didn't work. I will
pressing the PMU now...
Still working on this--thanks!!
I am in Safe Mode now: This is the weirdest thing: A bit from column A AND B:
The display is perfect EXCEPT for two parallel lines of 17, 3 millimeter-long black lines that follow the pointer everywhere it goes.
Get this: my current display is 1024x768, but when I change it to 640x480, the pointer and everything is perfect! (of course, I can only see a fraction of my desktop)
But then again... when I zoom in and out holding down control (in 640x480) the pointer lines appear again, but less lines. They disappear when I re-reset it to 640.
But yeah, safe mode is NEAR perfect with the except of the cursor lines. I can screen grab my cursor though to show...
You've also tried disconnecting and then reconnecting your monitor, right? What type of machine do you have? Single, dual processor etc. RAM .
Oh, to your last post do you have Universal Access enabled? Try turning that off. Try a few more resolutions and different Mhzs in the Displays control panel. It's encouraging but something is still off.
Yes, I tried everything with the monitor. I am 99 sure the monitor is not the problem....
It's a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5
Memory is 2 GB DDR SDRAM
I have just the zoom on with the Universal Access. Getting warmer:
The lines are less on the pointer. I did a test and lines are def more prominent with the zoom on.
But the lines are still there. I am still in Safe mode when I did this.
Ok, does it get worse again when you start up the regular way? Check this page and see if you have this latest (albeit old) update.
And finally the most important thing I can think of now. Do you have the original disks that came with the mac. Usually they are gray?

I restarted the Sony monitor--no change.
I went back to normal startup: the problems is still there. Really, the most important views minus videos are just normal/fine, but I guess I could start the computer is safe mode every time....?
Could it be that my graphics card is failing? And why would that be?? Is that common? That is the only thing I can think of...
