Transfer old sim card info to iPhone

Does anyone know how to transfer the information from an old SIM card to the iPhone? When the iPhone was activated at the store, the rep said to "just insert your old SIM card". Well, when I inserted the old SIM card, the phone had no service.

The last time I got a new phone, I was able to copy all information from the old SIM card to the new phone. I have a lot of photos, etc, I'd like to have on the iPhone.

Thanks.

The only thing you can transfer from the old SIM card to the iPhone are contacts (names and numbers). To do so, insert the old SIM card and go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar, scroll down and tap Import SIM Contacts. Everything else (photos, etc.) needs to be synced through iTunes. If you can connect your old phone to your computer, you can copy the other things and then sync them to the iPhone.
