Rendering to QT from Sony's Vegas on PC

I can render to anything without any problems from my Vegas EXCEPT to QT. For some reason I just can't seem to get the settings right.

I rendered a video to QT MTSC 640 X 480 and it came out quite good. I rendered the second video same settings but it was crap. Same type of video, same motion.

I looked at the settings in Gspot and both videos are different. First video had 2918kbps but at the same settings the 2nd video came out at only 435kbps. I had the quality set at 90%.

Can someone give me some setting suggestions for rendering from a PC editor to QT. I got to put the videos on my MBP and take to the client for a preview. I could just do a WMV as I do have flip 4 mac but I really need to get better with QT.

Can someone give me some help please?
Thanks
Allen

Hi Tom

Before I post, I usually do a search to see if the subject's already been answered. I live on the Cow, Vegas forum, in fact I'm sort of a moderator there. My picture's up on the top ;-))

So I did a search first and got quite a few previous posts to go through before I make a new post. I just thought I'd also post here in case anyone also uses Vegas on PC and Final Cut on MAC.

Thanks
Allen

Your first message said MTSC. You mean NTSC, right? Why would you render to 640x480? That's not NTSC spec. It's either 720x480 for DV or 720x486 for uncompressed CCIR601, but you're a Vegas CreativeCow moderator you have to know all that. What codec are you exporting to? DV is fixed data rate, so the slider setting is not relevant. The only standard definition format that Final Cut Express works in is DV. No other codec will work without rendering.

Hi Tom
Yes sorry my big fingers. NTSC As far as the 640X480, the QT template I used in Vegas said that was the video size. I didn't mess with it. I'm rendering now so I can't get in to give you the entire template settings. Not enough time to render to AVI and then to MOV in Squeeze. Don't need 2 renders for this preview. Master will go onto a full size DVCAM tape and sent out.

Not rendering for FCE. Rendering for my MBP and viewing on the QT player. I know I could ahve done WMV as like I said I got Flip-4-Mac but wanted to start getting some practise with QT and FCE.

I don't think I can bring an AVI file into FCE can I? I'm still leaning my MBP and FCE. Watched your DVD a few times and use your book for reference, but I'm backup up and under the gun right now on 4 projects. I have to take the vids into Chicago for previewing by the client Friday. The file came out at 1.7 gb I think it was and I'm watching it on my MBP right now. I got a really good picture.

My second project, I have my nNovia HD recording system set to MOV for bring directly into my MAC and FCE so I'm not going to have to use the ugh! PC's. Anyway the fellow I'm working on this project with uses FCP. I also dump the digital MOV files onto a HD he gave me for his MAC Pro so we can collaborate.

What happens when you play the exported file in the QT player? Is the screen white? That indicates it doesn't recognize the codec. If you're just playing from the laptop, 640x480 is fine, though it's not NTSC. The important thing is the codec.

If the codec is right, you can bring an AVI into FCE, but it will have to be rendered in the timeline. Final Cut is far less robust in its ability to handle multiple formats than Vegas.

Hi Tom
No they play fine on my MBP. I even brought in a 3 minute AVI test file and it played in the QT player just fine.

I thought I tested an avi file in the FCE timeline but I don't remember if I could import it or not. Hopefully these 2 project done in Vegas are okay on the preview Friday. Then I can got to experimenting with my FCE with the other project. I've already got the files off the digital recorder and into FCE. They work fine cause they're MOV files direct out of the nNovia. But I'm just scripting those, not doing the composits as AFAIK.

It's just other stuff I got to see if I can edit in FCE or not. AVI and WMV's mainly. Not into HD or AVCHD yet, hopefully soon.

Thanks for the help.
