Can't quit and remove Open Office

Hi, my profile may say that I am running Windows XP but the computer that I am referring to is a 1 month old Macbook that is running Leopard on Mac OS X 10.5.5 (which is not a choice in the dropdown menu)

Last week I downloaded Open Office. This was intended to be temporary until I can get Microsoft Office from my university. Since I've downloaded it it has been glitchy and annoying. I don't like it so I decided I'd rather delete it and continue using TextEdit until next week when I can get Office. However, I can't get Open Office to quit! It's like it's stuck there, so the computer won't restart or shut down. I have gone to the Library and moved the Open Office folder to the trash but I can't get the icon of it to move to trash and I can't delete all of it because it says it's still running. What do I do? Please help! I am new to owning a Mac (I've only used others until I got mine) and when it comes to technical stuff I am not that great with computers in general, so please be very clear! I really appreciate the help.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

It's best to avoid a hard shutdown, if you can.

Have you tried to "Force Quit" the app? It is ⌘-option-escape.

If that doesn't work, open activity Monitor in /Applications/Utilities and under "My Processes" chose that and "Quit Process". EDIT: You might just choose the "Force Quit" in the Quit Process window

Let us know.

Thank you so much! I was wondering if there was a "control-alt-delete" equivalent on the Mac. I forced quit then moved it to trash. It wouldn't let me empty the trash (because apparently some random stuff was still in use) so I restarted it (which I hadn't been able to do before) and then it let me. My only other question is if there could still be lingering files that I would want to remove as well...Windows is conditioned into me and I don't know what still goes for Macs. 🙂 I read some other stuff about people having trouble with the Mac version of OO. Hopefully I don't have the same trouble with Microsoft Office. Thanks again!

Try NeoOffice
http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

It is free & just for Macs! Without getting complicated, it is the Mac version of Open Office. It will have the typical Mac interface.

You may wish to buy or borrow (from the library) a Mac Leopard Manual. Macs can be very confusing to former Windows users.
"Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual" by David Pogue is very good.
Best of Luck!

See "Clean removal of all config files"

The right way to perform a clean reinstallation, deleting all existing user settings from previous versions, is as follows:

1. First, as an administrator, uninstall the "network installation" files.
2. Then delete the "user" folder from the user's home directory, as stated above. If you do not want a clean reinstallation, do not touch this user folder. You will lose all your user settings and user extensions.
If in doubt, just rename that folder or move it to another place.
3. Then remove the "OpenOffice.org installation files" folder if it exists.
4, Now the admin can perform an installation of the new "network installation" folder, and every user can start OOo again to automatically copy the "profile" folder to the "user" folder.

I don't think MS Office will be problematic.

Good luck.
