Music library disappeared after iTunes update

I just updated to iTunes. I cannot find any of my music in the library or play lists.
I read some posts about it. However I am not sure what exactly i should do in order to get the songs back to the iTunes library wherever the songs are. I have not deleted any of them.

Please help. This has not happened to me with any previous updates.

Thanks in advance.

I do not know how the music files have disappeared. There is a file with the name in the library but it is only a small file. I had more than one Gigabite of music. Why would any body want to delete those files? And why shoud this appear after an upgrade of teh ITunes?

I still have the library on my iPod and also on my iPhone. I wonder if there is some way to transfer those back to iTunes.

This has been a totally unexpected experience with Apple, which seldom caused me problems so far.

Karina - I'm a koolaid drinking Mac fan stuck with a PC and I've had the exact same thing happen to me. I ran the iTunes 8 upgrade and POOF 100+ songs are missing from my library and are nowhere to be found on my hard drive (there is only one) but the music still plays fine on my iPod even after syncing w/ PC (although songs still missing).

I have a top rated anti-virus/malware program running on my PC and no malicious bots/programs/files were found. The music files are just gone!

Anybody who works for Apple in iTunes wanna weigh in here?! I love Mac/iPod, but get my music back please!!

I hope some one at Apple is reading some of these posts and I hope they will straighten things out.
I do not believe the files disappeared becacuse of a virus. It simply does not show up on iTunes. ay be the path is wrong or something.
The measures suggested on the website, namely "dragging the file My Documents\My Music\iTunes etc etc to the desktop .." has not been very clear and it did not work for me. I even had an old Time Time machine backup, on an external drive etc has not yet helped me find the files.

I hope some one will tell me how to solve this or how to repopulate my iTunes with the music from my iPod or iPhone. Perhaps Apple will have an upgrade to their software to fix this mess.

I'm having a similar problem. I downloaded version 8 onto my Vista PC about one week ago and have been updating my library ever since. Then suddenly yesterday my PC crashed and when I rebooted iTunes had dumped all my info.

Luckily my iTunes folder was still there so I reimported everything and assumed all was back to normal.

Wrong. Now, everytime I close iTunes it dumps all my music, applications, ringtones, pictures, everything.....everytime.

Any ideas anyone???

I have not had any bad experience with apple products so far until the iTunes issue. Now I a having second thoughts. I have the songs in my iPod and I am exploring ways of getting it to iTunes since Apple does not offer an easy path for this.

I understand that there are products out there which can accomplish this. As mentioned before I hope some one at Apple is listening.

Keeping a CD Collection is a hobby for me, so naturally I still use Best Buy and Target to buy CD's (yes I like the album covers, etc).

1st I bought a Nano, then a classic 80 gig Ipod. Needless to say my love is music! Yesterday 10/18/2008, my Dad bought me some classic 70's music he and mom used to play so frequently while I was growing up (I'm and 80's kid). I imported about 8 CD's to add to my existing 2300 songs. When each CD was done importing, I checked to see that were in my library, and they were. I shut down my labtop to go out. I came back in and turned on my laptop to get ready for bed(I sleep with music playing), and my entire library had completely vanished! I've been up ever since reading tons of forums, trying different suggestions, and YES my songs and entire library is GONE!

Now I am not that savvy, but I did a system restore, and still NO LIBRARY! What the eff is going with Apple that they can't offer us a solution to retrieve our music! I am devasted! I know that sounds dramatic, but I absolutley live for my music! It is now 5:23 am, and my music has not been recovered, needles to say I cannot sleep!

I tried pluging my Ipod to see if my library would magically appear, NOTHING, instead it said that my Ipod was synced to another library, and if I synced to this (EMPTY) library I'd be **** outta luck with no mucis!

*** Apple, you guys have to do better than this!

I have had the same thing happen to my library and getting help from Apple is nearly impossible. I don't know if this will help you because by the date of your problem, this may not be the solution, but any info. is usefull. After I downloaded the latest upgrate, I've had problems with my library being deleted. I've reloaded all my ipods and library over 3 times because everytime I put everything back on and crossed my fingers, my library would be deleted again. So on the fouth time putting my library file back on to my computer (not a difficult thing but just a pain in the butt) and I started to put the "Genious" feature back on, I glanced once again, as we all do, to the terms and cond. and it stated something like " you are sending your library to itunes but they don't sell the info." or something to that effect. So it finally occured to me that if I'm sending my library info. to itunes, maybe they don't put it back once I log off and turn my computer off. So I tried not putting the "genious" feature on, and my library is still intact. I think everytime you use Genious you have to turn it off on your computer or else your library will be deleted. As far as any previous playlists, those are gone. You'll have to start from scratch. But its better than having a deleted library everytime you open itunes. Sorry for the long explanation. I could've said "dont turn in Genious, or turn genious off" when you log off, but if your like me, I want to know "why" this is happening. Anyway, this may help until Apple figures a way to fix this glitch. Let me know if it works! Good luck!
