Tough To Wake My Nano Up? Why?

I've owned iPod's of every flavor since the beginning, so I don't understand why after I press and hold the 'play' key and turn the 'hold' switch off it's so hard to wake the nano back up.

It's fine after an hour or two, but if I've gone three days without touching the nano and then want it to wake up, I can only do this by hitting play/menu at the same time and doing a reboot.

Is this normal? Anyone else?

Hi James,

I've heard other people mention that using the latest iPod Updater Utility to completely reset and also reformat the iPod nano may have some beneficial effect. You might want to try that before calling Apple Care (because they might not be too much help re: nano, it seems, lately).

That being said, however, I have had the same issues with my iPod U2 20GB for the last four or five months: Random sleep-coma after either me actively turning it off, or it going to sleep, regardless of Hold switch position. I recently tried the reformat/reinit thing, and it worked for a couple of weeks, but just today, it went to sleep and didn't wake up again without a reset. So it's a bummer. Every time I'm just about to think about sending it back to Apple under warranty, it seems to behave again for several weeks.

At first, I thought it might be an issue with my headphones (standard iPod ones) that may have a short or bad plug, etc; but it does its coma-sleep thing regardless of whether or not I have the headphones plugged in. So I guess not.

So try the reformat-iPod updater thing and keep us all posted. I'll also repost if I find the answer to my own issue.

No, the Updater didn't solve the deep sleep problem.

Also, to wake it up, I've got to hit the "MENU" button and not the traditional "PLAY" button.

Also, its acting funny on non-deep sleep. Let's say I hit PLAY and shut it off then slide the HOLD button. An hour later, just sliding the HOLD button over wakes up the nano instead of sliding HOLD and then hitting PLAY.

I don't know what's wrong.....does it work that way for everyone?

Hey,
I wound up answering my own question and yours too. After posting I ran across this article on the Apple site:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60945

It's not called Deep Sleep for the Nanos, it's called "Hibernation". And "Hibernation" is unique to the iPod Nano. The Nanos will hibernate after 14 hours, not 36 hours like the other iPods. I don't mind waiting for my Nano to wake up, I'm just glad that it's not a malfunction.

Hah-Hah! It looks like the saying, "It's not a bug. It's a feature!" Really is true in this case.

Jeff:

Good find, but I'm still kung-fused. More now than before!

I thought there were 2 degrees of turning the nano "off":

1. Hit PAUSE. After a few minutes, the screen goes blank as it conserves power and remembers your last nav position.

2. Press and Hold PAUSE. After two seconds, the nano is off. Slide over the HOLD switch, and it's off with no ability to be turned back on accidentally.

So explain Hibernate again? If you only hit PAUSE, the screen will go blank for 13 hours and 59 seconds and then go into Hibernation and remember the spot where you last were? Okay. That's not what's happening to me because I NEVER just tap PAUSE. I ALWAYS Press and Hold PAUSE and slide the HOLD switch. After a week or so, nothing wakes the nano up except rebooting (pressing MENU and SELECT) at the same time.

So.....I still need help here. Bigtime.

Something called "Coma" is going on. When the nano is turned off, the only way to wake him up is not to Press and Hold PLAY, but to reboot.

Yeah, I have this "issue" too. Mine will wake from hibernation eventually, however, without doing a reboot. It just takes waaaaay too long to wake from hibernation. The screen actually appears _totally blank_ for a good 20-30 seconds after I hit the play button even before the apple logo appears. Once the logo appears, it's another 5 seconds or so before I can use it.

I suppose the hibernation is a good feature to have if it really helps preserve battery life. My 1G iPod battery used to drain after a few days of just sittin in my bag, which was annoying. I just wish the nano woke a lot faster.

Steve:

In the scenario you mentioned, is that after you just hit the PAUSE key and let it go to sleep/hibernation or is that after you PRESS AND HOLD the PAUSE key and then slide the HOLD slider over?

I ask because (as defined by Apple) I'm supposedly never hibernating because I ALWAYS press and hold the PAUSE button and then slide the HOLD switch over which is the "OFF" mode...and then after a few days only a reboot wakes the nano up.

Thanks.

Good question. In fact, I'm having the opposite experience you mentioned:

1) if I just hit pause and let it eventually go to hibernation, I have the problem I described where it takes forever to wake up again the next day.

2) If I hold pause until it goes off and then slide the hold switch: When I slide the hold switch back over, the ipod comes on instantly without the need to hit any buttons. I'll have to test to see what happens if I leave the ipod for a day or two with the hold switch on. I don't usually do this because i have a case that makes it unnecessary touse the hold swtich...
