Reinstall AOL

Those look like a great set of instructions - just what I was looking for. Do you think I should reinstall the Mac Mail utility also? Do you have similar instructions?

AOL seems to be working after the reinstall but problems continue with MAIL. It handles incoming mail fine but refuses to send any outgoing. It says "the sender address xxxxxx was rejected by the server". I tried cancelling the IMAP account and reinserted it but that didn't work.

I suppose I have to trash all the MAIL preferences, etc. Do you or anyone else have similar detailed advice?

My outgoing server was just smtp.aol.com, without my AOL screen name. I changed it to add the screen name and I don't get the sneder address rejected by server anymore - I just get a spinning ball until it times out and the message still isn't sentAll the other settings were as you said except that the outgoing server port is 25. That is what it has always been.

Problem continues - it tells me connection to server on port 587 has timed out.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I removed the com.apple.mail.plist and that didn't help. I then removed a com.apple.plist.saved (possibly a result of a problem last year) and still no help. I still can't send outgoing mail from the MAIL utility. Any further suggestions?

Here is what solved the problem for me. I see that many others had this problem. I used smtp.aol.com for outgoing server and then went to authentication, which I never used before. When I did this, it changed outgoing server to smtp.aol.com:my screen name. Now it works.

Ali B: You did tell me to change outgoing server to smtp.aol.com:screen name. I tried it and it did not help. What you did not tell me was to use password authentication (which I had never used before). That was the missing agreement. As I said, password authentication automatically added my screen name to smtp.aol.com.
