Time Machine is not working for me

I don't even know if I am using it right but here we go:

Got my macbook in May/08, set up time machine, it backed everything up...good times. I then unplugged it cause I don't want it using up a USB port all the time. I figured when I wanted it backed up I'd just plug it in.

so the other day I did that, but apparently it didn't do anything because today I plugged it in again and all that's there is from May.

So, i thought to myself what can i do to make this thing back up? so in my finder window I right clicked on it and selected "back up now". And I don't know what that did, but it was doing something for about 20 minutes (which seems REALLY long to just be updating, i dont have that much new stuff) and then all of a sudden it just stops and i get an error message saying something about when I remove a device make sure I eject it first. Meanwhile I didn't remove anything and it's still showing as being connected. Anyway I had to go so I just ejected it and left.

Now I am home again and it looks like it didn't back up anything earlier. Except there is a file in there that is 3.69GB called "2008-09-18-120352.inProgress". So what is that? Should I just delete that? it doesn't seem to actually have anything in progress, plus the time stamp is 12:03 pm and it's almost 7 now so...I have no idea what to do.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mac OS X (10.5.2), Macbook
