Itunes 8 freezes and locks me out of all functions

Im using Itunes 8 with Mac OS X version 10.5.5

Itunes 8 locks up frequently>

IMac, Mac OS X (10.5.4), Iphone 8 gig, Apple TV, Vista Laptop and desktop
