Using nano with iPod dock -- no sound

I've seen lots of mentions that the dock connector on the nano is "standard". So I plugged the nano into my older iPod dock at home (came with my 40GB monochrome iPod). Power charging works, but with the nano plugged in I get no sound through the line out port on the dock. The 40GB iPod sound works fine through the same dock.

Is this expected or do I have a defective nano? Thanks in advance.

Nano will charge through older docks on Firewire (not sure about older USB docks) but won't play through these which suggests a change in the pin structure but not the actual shape of the connector. Sadly the solution is to get a new dock for nano (or any new Apple iPod Dock and use the adaptor supplied) and use the line-out port. the dust has not settled yet on what older peripherals will work with naano and what will not... Keep on using the 40Gb as your main music store and the nano as your mobile store...

Eric,

I noticed an odd behavior trying to use my nano with my friend's docking station the other day. I would get no sound out of the dock unless I reset the nano. In playing around with it, it seemed that plugging in my headphones caused the audio out through the dock connector to stop. lf I simply reset the nano before connecting to the dock (after unplugging the headphones), then the audio out through the dock worked fine.

It might just be something funky with my Sony headphones, but I didn't have my Apple buds with me to try.
