Assuming you mean a pdf file which will display its first page on a browser before downloading the entire file, I think you would need to use Adobe Acrobat or some other pdf optimizer program.

I don't think so. If "linearized", a very large pdf file will display its first page immediately in a browser even if downloading the entire file takes a long time. I don't have a large file to test at the moment, but I think pdf's maded with OS X do not behave that way.

If you create A document in Pages, and export it to PDF it will not by default Linearize on the web. You can use an app like Adobe Acrobat Pro to do this. Preview will not suffice either, if you have a large PDF file for the web you are best off getting Acrobat to optimize your files.

If memory serves, this function appeared in PDF 1.1 or PDF 1.2 and should be default. Longish PDFs made with Quartz display as expected, although these PDFs are not large. Surprisingly, the key for optimization is not set so Quartz does not do this by default. Now why would one not do this by default if the idea is that Quartz is to support imaging services for the cloud? /hh
