Turning off MobileMe sync deletes all contacts

This morning I decided to setup MobileMe syncing on my iMac and my iPhone 3G. Followed all the steps (synced phone with iMac first etc) and now I have all my Contacts and Calendar on MobileMe. So far so good. I enabled Contacts and Calendar syncing for MobileMe on my phone aswell (Mail was already setup) and it all worked well too.

However, I'm not sure that I want to continue Contacts and Calendar syncing with MobileMe. I only have my iMac and my phone and they are kept in sync whenever I sync my phone with iTunes. So, I disabled Contacts syncing for MobileMe on my iPhone....and that deleted all the contacts on my phone!! Yes, there is a warning, but WHY???? Is there a way to disable MobileMe contact syncing on the phone and keep my contacts? For the time being I re-enabled contacts syncing to get back my contacts.

Segundo percebi, esses mesmos contactos permanecem no iMac certo?

Obrigado Francisco, funcionou! Mas foi preciso no painel "Advanced" clicar a opção "Replace information on this iPhone" para os Contacts.

For the benefit of those who don't read Portuguese, Fancisco said that disabling Contacts syncing in MobileMe will delete all your phone contacts but you can restore them by syncing normally with iTunes. You do have to remember to check the "Replace information on this iPhone" option in the Advanced panel of the iPhone "Info" tab in iTunes.

I still can't think of a reason why deleting Contacts is necessary if you disable MobileMe syncing. Seems like a recipe for losing data if you ask me!

Michael.

Glad I could help you on this subject!

Just to finish this thread, I would like to explain why do your contacts dissapear, everytime you disable MobileMe syncing. Just think with me:

The main objective of MobileMe service, as you might know, is to sync several information over-the-air. So this means that all your contacts are stored on the MobileMe server and not on your iPhone. That's why it normally takes more than usual to access your contacts! Therefore, after saying that, everytime you disable MobileMe syncing, all your contacts will dissapear!

Hope you get the idea!
