Two x1900 cards

Is it possible to have two X1900 G5 cards (One in the 16x slot, one in 8x, not in crossfire) to drive two separate displays?

I know one card can drive two but I want my main display to have 100% of the main GPU/memory to itself.

I would get a 6600 but they are selling for stupidly high prices, I can get an X1900 for the same price or cheaper. I can even get a flashed PC 7800GT for what those low end 6600's sell for!

Speaking of, question 2: Why do the 6600's sell for so much when cards like the x1900 and 7800 have 2x the power?

Thank you. So even though the X1900 is a 16x card it will still operate fine, just at 8x speed. Thats fine. My second display is for video playback on a 17" LCD so the bandwidth restriction probably won't be noticeable.

If only ATI had given us the full 512MB on the X1900, that flashed 7800 GTX is looking more and more attractive.

Yes, according to the manual, and for me, my experience confirms it. My 6600 is actually in my 4X slot to give the GTX some breathing space and it works just fine. And I wonder just how much speed is given up by not putting one in the full slot. As you said, though, for our purposes, I don't think it matters all that much.

Thanks for the feedback! 🙂 If you do go hunting for a 7800 GTX, try "local338" on ebay. They were great to deal with and though the card was refurbished (maybe because it was flashed), it looked mint and has run just great. Have fun, Stygi.

"local338" is the exact one I was looking at. I have been considering it for some time, but their location in China has kept me from buying from them.

But, since you have bought the exact same item I'm looking at that has greatly pushed me towards buying it from them.

Having 2x the VRAM and extra 250mhz ram speed sure would be nice.

Yeah, China (not that that's a terrible thing) but Hong Kong to be precise. If you go that route say Hello to Wai for me from bienchat. He was a heck of a nice guy. There was some back and forth between us as I'd never installed a card like that before and he was unfailingly decent and helpful and, it seemed, always there. They take their business very seriously.

Great. I've got the 7800 GTX (item 250297569219), a molex Y-splitter and a molex-6 pin adapter. $290 total investment, 2x (or less) than what I would have paid for a 6600 and I'll get more than 2x the performance.

I'll use the existing graphics power cord for the 7800 and power the x1900 by splitting the superdrive power cable. The X1900 has a TMG AT1 cooler so it occupies 2 slots as well. Looks like it will be a full house!

Thats great, Stygi 🙂

A full house indeed. Might be a good time to invest in the application "Hardware Monitor" as well:

I just had a Dual 2.7 that seemed to constantly run too hot for its own good. Since getting this one I've become obsessive about temperatures in general and I use Hardware Monitor quite often to keep an eyes on things. Perhaps with all slots taken on your machine it would be a good idea to check the cards temps every so often. I'm sure you don't want them to go prematurely. HM is just a good app in general that reports on a lot of things. The best of its kind, imho, out there.

Good luck with your new set up. I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it.

Take care,
Steve

I have been eying that program but I haven't bought it since I could not find a for sure answer if it can see GPU temperatures in PPC models.

I also like their CPU Speed Menu program but $8 is too much for a one trick program. Do you know of one that will do that for free (or at least cheaper)? I know the Energy Save CP does but I have been looking for something more handy.

Setting the CPU power settings to "Automatic" causes crashes.

Hardware Monitor costs some money too but I've found it to be worth it. I used to use iStat Pro but I found its CPU readings to be unreliable. HM does show GPU temps, and quite a few others, and quite a few other things in general. I've bought a few things from Dr. Bresink even the CPU speed menu. Yeah, I balked at paying for that also, but I got tired of the hassle of changing power settings myself all the time. I change them quite often too. And I also run at highest or lowest only, never automatic. CPU Speed Menu gives you several different ways to set it up. I have mine set to only show high and low. Its pretty handy and for 8 bucks, eh, I came around to the idea and don't regret paying for it.

Nor do I regret buying Hardware Monitor. The guy works right off of Apples Specs and his products are solid and accurate. But the real clincher for me is the customer service. Dr. Marcel Bresink actually answers all the email sent to him himself and quickly at that. He is really knowledgeable about all things Mac and has informed me of things that I can't imagine finding out about anywhere else. Granted he does seem to have a stern way about him and probably doesn't suffer fools gladly, but again, the guy stands rock solid behind his product.

Stygi,

I hate to tempt you any further, but...

I get email from these guys (at my request). I've bought a lot of stuff from them and they're great to do business with so I like to know what their latest deals are. Anyway, just got another mailer from them and noticed this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item-maillist/Other%20World%20Computing/42DDR2PAIR4G/? source=hdb0919

They are going for 12 dollars less than I paid for them a month or so ago.

Just thought I'd give you the nod as you seem to be as performance oriented as I am. I swear I won't tell you how fine the Velociraptor is though. 😉

That is a VERY tempting deal and I DO have two open slots....but 3.5GB seems to meet my needs for now. I average 1.5gb-750mb free and VM activity is almost nonexistent. Ram looks to be getting cheaper and cheaper, I'll just wait and get more later down the road.

The Velociraptor is undoubtedly quick but I prefer capacity. I have two 1TB drives and I'll get a 1.5TB drive as soon as they become available.

Thanks for the heads-up though! These G5s have plenty of life left.
