ipod nano and photo download

So is there really no way to download photo's to the nano other than through the computer. No camera connector, belkin card reader, nothing? Is this something that could be added to a software update later or why would they do this?

I think everyone knows that it is possible with a normal ipod. Im pretty sure thats what Ted stated. What we were wondereing about was if it is possible that a THIRD PARTY (just like my last post stated, i.e-not Apple ) could produce such an item , or if the nano is limited in the way its produced in the factory to limit this.

Nobody even came close to violating the terms of use.Sheesh

I don't think that's what Ted was saying, but unless he chimes in, we won't know. There would be plenty of reasons someone would choose a "regular" iPod over the nano; the picture compatibility is not the only reason they could be considered superior. Mainly, it's storage space. I understand my Terms link was overboard, and I apologize. I believe the only answer we can really come to here is that it is currently not possible, but it may be in the future.

I said it would never be possible with a nano. If it was possible with a nano then no one would want to buy a larger ipod. I am well aware it's possible on normal ipods.
I doubt anyone has a 30gb slideshow they want to show on a TV. A nano would be perfect for doing slideshows if it had that feature built-in. To bad that would make it bigger, heavier and more expensive. They had to put the headphone jack on the bottom. where would they put the AV port?

What they need is ipods with bluetooth so you don't even need to bother with the headphone port 😉

Ok, I understand now. We were talking about different features. I think the original poster was wondering if there would ever be the feature to download photos to the iPod nano directly from a camera's memory card. Basically using the iPod as more memory for digital cameras. You're talking about playing a slideshow of images right? The AV out won't happen with this version of the nano, but a card reader might eventually be an option, in which case a serious photographer might still have need for a full-size iPod 🙂

Thanks for clarifying.

Ok, sorry for the stressfull post. I really just want to be able to download photos onto my ipod nano from my camera for temporary storage (disney world etc. nothing professional).

I ordered the nano after waiting for a year for an ipod mini to have a color screen and do photo's. My idea of my perfect ipod plan was to have an ipod in my kitchen stationary on inmotion speakers (which is where my 3rd gen ipod is now), an ipod to back up my entire computer at work including thousands of full res. photo's (my ipod photo 60gig now) which my wife carry's around in her purse for us to use in the cars, and an ipod to replace having to carry my wifes ipod in her purse and have something tiny that will hold just enough songs and be able to carry around theme parks etc. for photo's without taking up as much room as the ipod photo (which is the nano). I thought I had it perfect since steve jobs stated that it would be compatable with all existing accessory's (which is what he said, not speculating). Since I put all my photo's on my work computer I will be able to put them on my ipod photo if I wanted to view them in slide shows, so no worry's there. But the camera connector is a problem for me, especially since he stated it would be compatable with all accessorys.

So Sorry for the big story it just seemed like things got a little crazy from this post and I wanted to make clear my needs. So I'm hoping King Cole was right on his last post and it may be an option soon as I'm sure it would make people like me and Travis alot happier (especially after the keynote). Ted, this is a good example of why one would still buy the normal ipod, if this nano was 60gig I would see your point.

Thank you all for your posts though, I was just remembering back to when the photo came out. How mad everyone was. No direct download link from the camera and you couldn't view the photo's imported from a media reader unless synced with your computer. "A perfect product gone bad", everyone thought. What happend, a software update and new connector from apple. I should have thought about this more befor posting.

Thanks again everybody and regardless, look at this thing, its AWESOME!

Folks,

The initial camera download for the iPod photo was a listed feature...it just got a better implementation due to complaints about viewability.

The nano has no such listed feature...Apple will or will not provide such connectivity based on their strategy going forwards...you should not hold you breath for this; if you need field-photo storage, do not buy a nano.

Technically, both Apple and 3rd parties can do wonders with the dock connector and some firmware...and as a photo iPod owner and nano owner, I am happy about Apple moving non-audio circuitry out of the headphone jack (it has caused audio problems on the 4rth gen iPods).

But Apple does not strive to bring all features to all models, and as a real company trying to stay profitable in a competive market (with giants like MicroSoft aiming at them) I understand that their technical efforts have to be balanced with market analysis.

Apple's iPod installer upgrades have had limited past history in bringing new features to old models; a notable exception was AAC support to allow older iPods to play ITMS files...and that makes sense to "down port" to older iPods, right?

So, if you want photo camera downloading, don't buy a nano. If want small, sleek, sexy, with a nice display, screenlock, lap timer, and non-moving flash, then go for it.

[I have an iPod of every generation/model except 2nd gen, and there are firmware improvements that later iPods have, that earlier gens seemingly could have had, but don't. Is it deliberate strategy? Is it lack of engineering resource? I don't know, but that's how it is...]

Steve Jobs:

"This is a full featured ipod. So, first thing is, its got that 30 pin dock connector like the ipod and the ipod mini so it plugs into the entire universe of ipod accessories."

Why say this?

I understand if you look at the camera connector on the website it will not say it is compatible. But who looks up all the accessories they already own to see what is compatible or not after this statement. Why should they have too? It has photo capability's, it runs on a flash card just like a camera, why not this? I should be very clear to a customer what these things have and do not have befor you buy them. I see clearly that the slideshow/video out feature is not on it but nowhere does it state that you will never be able to download photo's to it.

Does moving the non-audio circuitry out of the headphone jack make it impossible for the update I am hoping for? Technically?

When you order an ipod online with custom engraving as far as I know, your stuck with it. This post would be more helpful to those who read this post before they buy, not after.

And I really don't get what you mean by apple not striving to bring all features to all models. I would think this is exactly what they are trying to do. Which is why they created the nano. Remember, "This is a full featured ipod...plugs into the entire universe of ipod accessory's." I have alot of ipods too and it seems to me this has been their goal. Also remember the ipod mini click wheel then full size with clickwheel. ipod photo then ipod color. ipod mini then ipod photo, color, etc. Its seems like they want them all to have the same features eventually, just different sizes.

And as far as I knew microsoft is a waze away in the music field.

Thanks for your post and hopefully you will be able to help me understand the technical side of the circuitry. That is the most important thing to this whole post. Is it technically possible or not. Thanks! And I will also give you +'s for trying so hard to help out.

John.

& for the record... I am keeping my nano no matter what because I do believe this is the coolest product out there. Just missing something handy!
