Can an old iPod Dock (Model M9130G/A) be used to charge and sync
the iPod touch (2G) if the touch's USB 2.0 cable is used to connect
the dock to the computer?
If this is the universal dock, used to connect all iPods, with the slightly larger hole to fit any adapter that comes with an individual iPod, then yes.
I am not referring to the Apple Universal Dock.
The iPod Dock was used to sync and charge the
iPod 3G via FireWire. Are the pins of the
connector set up to provide sync and charge
of the new iPod touch if the USB cable
is substituted?
I recall reading in some post that all firewire docks for old iPods no longer charge the new generation of iPods You might try doing a search on "firewire" and 2G.
I have an old dock (predates universal) purchased for 3G ipod 4 years ago. No model # visible on the dock. There is a line out jack in addition to the dock adapter connector on the back. My 2G touch fits the dock opening with some slop but seats snugly on the connector and syncs and charges using the USB cable supplied with the touch. The 2G touch also seats properly on my iHome clock radio and plays thru the radio, but does not charge there. I have read that the latest touch and phone charge only on 5 volt USB pins, prior devices charged on either USB or 12 volt firewire pins.
Just a note, I found out that the new pin connected component cables hooked up to that S-Video univ. dock won't output video through that dock when the ipod touch 2G is hooked up but it will output video through the audio/video jack (composite connection) it very well may be the setup of the old style universal dock. However the iPod touch 2G will output through the pin connector if it's connected directly to it for the component connection. I don't know if the newer universal docks would have this issue.
I still would like apple to develop a visualiser for the ipod touch / iphone =p (so i can output my audio to my samsung (since it won't play the music on the TV if there's no video feed)
