I am having the same issue and am using Verizon. Hopefully an apple update will be released soon to take care of this VERY annoying issue...

This same behavior just started on Nov. 17 with both of my Verizon accounts. I don't have any answers, just seems strange that our Verizon accounts started doing this about the same time.

I'm using Verizon, and the issue has really come on since yesterday. Verizon told me to contact Apple. Has anyone done that yet?

Here's what Support had me do. Quit Mail. Remove the Mail Folder from your home Library, drag to desktop, do the same with the com.apple.mail.plist in the Preferencs. Launch Mail and let it rebuild, uncheck the auto option. Make sure you check out the original settings, my incoming and outgoing changed so I entered the info manually.

Or call Apple (I went through the website to have someone call me).

I just purchased a new iMac Saturday, Nov. 8, and I am having the same pop-up problem. I have Verizon. So I don't think it's a Comcast issue.

It's not a Comcast issue ron

I'm also a verizon subscriber and this started yesterday Nov 17 and is still ongoing today Nov 18

    I'm tried the usual stuff
disk utility ... verify and repair permissions ,
    first aid the key chain,
    quit mail and reboot etc

    none of that has worked
I have an older G3 imac running tiger that i am going to go online with later to see if it is a leopard only issue

same problem, started yesterday. very tedious resolution. hope the problem doesn't return.....
verizon fios is my isp. alum 24" imac, os 10.5.5 with all current updates. spent 2+ hours with apple care on phone.... said they had never heard of the problem. guess i should have looked here first.
step 1, reset keychains; no luck. step 2, recreate plist; no luck. step 3, recreate keychain; no luck. step 4, recreate mail folder! that worked. have 5 email accounts, took long time, then had to recover some mails from original mail folder. that's the good news.
a month ago i bought a new macbook and populated it via migration assistant. impressive process; worked great,,,,, but you guessed it, recreated the mail system from the alum imac,,, had no problems til yesterday, same as the imac. sounds like more then a coincidence to me... a mac virus?
i'm putting off recreating the mail system on the macbook until 10.5.6 is released to see if that resolves the problem. if not, another hour or two of 'recovery' drudgery.
too bad apple care folks don't communicate with each other,,,, or are programmed to never acknowledge an existing problem..

I too have been having this problem since Monday. I've tried all the tricks that have been mentioned in this forum, some work for awhile but in the end it's back to the same, rejected password.

Now for what is different from the majority of the other posters. I am NOT using Comcast. I am on Verizon Fios in NY.

I'm on OS X 10.5.5 with all the latest and greatest updates. The only other difference is I'm using Port 110 with no SSL, can't remember if Fios requires that port but it's been working with no problems in the past.
