Add me to the Verizon FiOS list of victims. Just one more Leopard bug designed to annoy me. It almost seems like when Mail does an auto-Get Mail, that it sends out improper text, perhaps a capitol letter to a UNIX server? I know that Verizon requires at least ONE lower case letter. If Mail is sending out an uppercase letter, it will fail.

We have the same problem, POP server refuses password about every 10 minuutes. I am on Verizon DSL and my problem started on 11/17/08. We have mail 3.5 and os 10.5.5. I suspect an auto update caused my problem this week. It is a real pain.

btw, no problem on g4 running 10.4.11 email works fine....... but has only 2 email accounts, not 5.

Just adding another to this list of those with password problems in recent days. I have Verizon DSL, so it's not a Comcast problem.

Mail prefs always show an empty box under "incoming mail" even though I save the changes when I input the password. When I input the password in the alert box, I always click "remember."

Not sure if Keychain is part of the problem, but I ran Keychain First Aid -- did not fix the problem. I have also repaired permissions, and have restored preference files from Time Machine from about 10 days ago for both Keychain and Mail. Still asks for my password upon relaunch.

The fix I entered above is still holding (fingers crossed), haven't had to re-enter password since.

i have too much in my email to lose to go thru the rebuilding process... i turned off the auto-get in the mail prefs and do it manually... so far it hasnt asked me for my pw
  • MadAl Level 1 Level 1 (50 points)
If it's any consolation, you won't lose the emails, when you drag those files to your desktop you can import them once you have the rebuilt mail.

    didnt know that... thanks...

since i have been getting mail manually i havent gotten that error message again... i may just go this way instead of doing the rebuild...

I am a Verizon DSL user with 10.5.5 and Mail 3.5 and the password rejection is making me twitchy.....With all these complaints how can Apple not make a formal acnowledgement of this problem! All the haughty TV ads Apple puts out only make this worse.

At the top of this thread, it says there is one "answer." What is it? Manually getting email?

If somebody has solved this problem (not received the pop-up box for a full day, could you let the rest of us know what you did?

    Thank you.

Verizon user here and this problem cropped up over the last few days. In checking my Mail preferences, I noticed that in 'Advanced' pane, the Authentication setting was 'Authenticated POP (APOP)". Never having selected this, I changed the setting back to "Password" and all has been well for several hours, even with opening and closing Mail occasionally. The pop-up box hasn't reappeared yet...!

good catch, foremike. verizon fios for me,,, i have 5 email accounts, 4 of them are they all had been set to (not by me)'Authenticated POP (APOP)' and i have one account with gmail; that one was still 'password' and never gave the message requesting password verification. i smell a mac virus........
seems to be working fine now that all are changed back to 'password'.

    Very good catch...
    this looks and feels right

5 mail accounts with fios verizon
    1 with gmail
all the fios ones were changed to APOP and were giving the pw prompt
the 1 gmail was still password and did not give any pw prompts

time will tell but i think this is the fix

if this pans out, someone should tell apple
it would save hrs of callers time and frustration

a few hours later and still working,,, many 'get mails' later.

i called apple care to report resolution. was properly thanked and advised that this will be added to their 'knowledge base'. at least now if someone calls apple care with this symptom, they will be directed to a proper resolution.

thanks to all who contributed to this forum.....

Thanks. This fix is working for me, too. We should also probably report the fix to Verizon and Comcast, since they get called before Apple.
