Final Cut 6.0.3 not recognizing HDV deck for recording

I am trying to layoff my Final Cut HDV project to my Sony HVR-M25U, but under "video playback" Final Cut is not recognizing an HDV device (grayed out). I can capture HDV footage from the Sony deck. And I can burn HDV DVD's via Compressor and DVD Studio Pro. Any ideas? Thank you.

Sequence Presets are at HDV 1080i/60.

I'm coming firewire out of the computer to the deck (which is set at HDV in). I monitor the deck either through its built in monitor and audio meters or BNC out of the deck to a CRT monitor.

It's strange that Final Cut recognizes this deck via the firewire while capturing, but does not recognize the deck for playback from the timeline.

I'm not familiar with your deck but usually if you can see the video of the timeline on the built in screen of the deck and audio on the decks meters it's a simple matter of playing the timeline and hitting record on the deck.

The typical set up is firewire to the deck and out from the deck to your audio and video monitors. Hence you are able to edit while observing the process on external monitors. So it sounds like this is working for you?

FCP has a history of problems using "Print to Tape" but just playing the timeline and hitting record on the deck always worked.

Is it just print to tape that doesn't work or can you not even monitor the timeline externally through your deck period?

Is the drop down menu under View/External Video/set to "All Frames" Also try one lower "Refresh Video Devices"

The Sony deck has been very reliable, and the built in video and audio monitors really make it nice. But, no, I am not able to monitor while editing or see the timeline on the internal monitor of the Sony deck (nor register the audio). I have selected "All Frames" on playback but it defaults back to "Off". I am not trying to "Print to Tape", and I have tried "Refresh Video Devices."

Okay. I unchecked "Different Output for Print to Video/Edit to Tape", but I still cannot monitor the timeline. I selected "All Frames" again as well to no avail. Under A/V Devices, HDV is still grayed out, and the "Different Output for Print to Video/Edit to Tape" continues to default back to being checked even after I hit "Okay".
I can still capture from the deck (just to make sure).

i haven't used this deck in a while, but see if in the menu or front panel there is some kind of *HDV/DV in* setting. It may be set to take input from composite or component only. I don't know about the one you have but the DSR-25 and DSR-11 have a switch on the front panel that lets you change what the input source is. Choices are:DV, S-video, and video.

Look for something that says input source HDV or DV. It may be in DV input mode. This would not affect your output (ability to capture FROM) because that is dictated by the tape. Input is dictated by this switch.

I have tried a different firewire cable, but I will try another one tomorrow. I do have the Easy Set Up set at HDV 60i and opened a new sequence. However, I'm not sure how to generate color bars from Final Cut.
I'm heading home in a short while, so I won't be able to try anything again until the morning. I do appreciate all the help you've been giving me. Fortunately, I am not in crisis mode and have lots of time to work this out.

Thank you again!

Hi Red truck, thanks for chiming in. I think slottodd was responding to my query here with this comment. In one of his earlier posts he does mention that his deck is set to "HDV In" so that sounds in order unless there's a menu setting that also needs to be checked.

Slottodd, go to the canvas window and at the bottom right there is a button with a film icon on it. Select color bars 1080i and you should get bars and tone. It should show on your deck and you can drag it to the timeline also.

I was having the same problem, I had my Canon XH-A1 connected via FireWire to my Mac, and I was editing HDV 1080i60 video, I logged and captured video okay I did all the editing fine, until I tried to output my 30 sec commercial back to my XH-A1. After a lot of reading and testing, even tried a new FW cable.
This is it: Turn your camera on, put it on VCR, ( make sure the FW cable is unplug from the camera at
this time ) go to menu SIGNAL SETUP go to PLAYBACK STD enter and select DV, exit the menu and connect the FireWire cable, you should be back to normal. Go the to FCP and make sure audio and video settings are correct, remember to set to HD FIRE WIRE BASIC.
Good lock to all!
