Cannot import Leopard-generated mail into Mail running under Tiger

Hi,
Recently my G4 mini crashed in a most awkward way and, because I had to reinstall, I decided to downgrade it from Leopard back to Tiger. This because I was not happy with its performance running Leopard.
Now I have trouble importing my mails that are produced during the period Leopard was running.
They are greyed out in the import-menu, although they look to have the same suffix.
Are they of different making? Can I just copy the mailfolder?

I am clueless, who is not?

Well, this problem is driving me crazy by now.

From the beginning: I transferred the Leopard mail from the mini to my new iMac and imported it in Leopard-Mail. There I looked to export it again: I only discovered the option of archiving mailboxes, which I used.

I transfered a mailbox with a small number of mails to my mini and succeeded to import the mailbox, but it did not work for bigger mailboxes (say over 300 mails). So I divided them in smaller ones. It worked almost well, about a hundred mails did not transfer somehow, even not after repeating this several times.

I was quite satisfied till I noticed that the list of mails is there, but not the mail itself: In the textfield it writes that mail cannot be downloaded from the server whilst being offline. The account should go online.
Huh?
I don't see the emlx-files in the user-library. They should be there, no?

And o yes: I had a large archive (4 years of mail) which was made in the Tiger era in Mail available before entering this exercise. Suddenly it disappeared! I can see the emlx-files in the library, but cannot browse them in Mail.

Any suggestions?
Do I need some background information how Mail works?

Feedback is more than welcome!

Thanks BDAqua for helping out. The program works nicely and I managed to convert my mails to mbox format and open them in Tiger-Mail. Not only the list of mails, but also the content of the mails was visible, so I shut down the computer satisfied yesterday night.

However, one day later I find myself in the same trouble: the list of mails is there, but when clicking on a mail, there is only the phrase: this message has not been downloaded from the server. Please go online (this is translated from Dutch).

Could you please tell me why the mails are no longer visible?

thanks
Wim

Hmmm, how did Eudora work out... never had any problems like this with it!?

Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving this +folder & file+ to the Desktop then reboot...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail

Move to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index

You can always move them back if it doesn't help.

Dear BDAqua,

thanks again for thinking along.
About Eudora: I'd rather avoid using a second mailprogram. Or should it be just for onetime use to get the archives back in Mail?

I do not quite understand your suggestion, about moving folders and files.

Do you mean:
Quit Mail,
then In your home folder, try moving /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail to the Desktop
then reboot your computer
then move to the desktop /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
then start again Mail.

Is that what you mean?

Thanks

Wim
