iPhone deletes all my contacts through MobileMe

I had this problem a while ago when 'Push' was introduced and its now come back to haunt me with 2.1

When I go to the British Library with my Macbook and iPhone the iPhone deletes all my contacts. This has happened two days in a row - an empty address book and no means of knowing whom texts and calls are from apart from context. Oddly the calendars are still fine. At first I thought this was because I haven't signed up to the library's wireless service and that the Macbook was unsuccessfully uploading to MobileMe and this wiping the contacts. And yet, when I get home my Macbook gets a warning from MobileMe that contacts have been changed in the cloud, whilst they still remain on the system. What is making the iPhone corrupt its own contacts and those in the cloud?

iMac/Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.5)
